Update information for month end figures and reports including SOX compliance.
I have learned that you can find a solution to every problem when people/groups get involved in open discussion and those different ideas often become part of the resolution. When management engages with all it's coworkers in all groups of the company everyone feels like part of a big family and overall people would feel better to speak/look out for one another safety and do the right things. Personally, I treat all coworkers/costumers with respect saying hello, good morning and helping anyone when help is needed.

I was attracted to Shell shortly after graduating from college by recruiters who promised great pay, options for advancement, and the chance to work in a groundbreaking, innovative atmoshere. Unfortunately the longer I was there, and the more I learned about what the company actually did, the more disgusted I became with the work. Shell's goal is profit, pure and simple, no matter what the cost. We would be forced to sell an image of safety, responsability, and respect for the environment while behind the scenes the top guys were busy plotting the quickest way to basically destroy one of the planet's last pristine regions, the Arctic. When I asked about the double standard here - telling the outside world we were being safe when inside it was all about moving fast, grabbing opportunities, beating the competition, and crushing opposition in order to make sure we were the first to control the enormous wealth of petroleum in the Arctic - I was told to shut up and mind my own business. I started researching online and realized there are tons of environmental campaigns against Shell and many scientists who say the Arctic must be left alone to stop irreversible climate change. Coming from the energy sector, I KNOW how many renewable and clean energy sources there are that we could develop instead of drilling for oil. It got to the point where I could barely look myself in the eye; I just couldn't bear the thought of what my wife and kids would say if the company I worked for was re
A usual shift started with the second shift person finishing his duties while I took over the register and dealt with the Night rush of customers. After that died down I had to perform other duties like stocking the coolers, the shelves, cleaning the bathrooms, etc. As the night shift cashier the job was to run the entire store by yourself until morning management arrived.
I learned that communication is important on the job because that's how stuff around the workplace gets left undone. I also learned that proper communication helps prevent disasters from happening and worker morale from dropping like the Titanic.
The culture of the place was mostly relaxed until inspection time. Then suddenly the head manager cared about every single little detail and would stress out literally everyone in an attempt to get the perfect score. which would be fine except for the part where he would conveniently forget to dish out the bonuses everyone was supposed to get for the high score.
The hardest part of the job is honestly filling out the time between customers and duties once you figure out the fastest way to do everything that needs to be done before morning since you cant just sit there in front of the camera.
The most enjoyable part is honestly dealing with the various customers. Since the location is right on the freeway you get all sorts of characters coming in from random places so you get to see all sorts of faces and personalities that can make your day (or night)

The best thing about Shell Trading is that there are many opportunities for advancement as the organization is extremely dynamic and ever-changing. The largest drawback to this, however, is that Shell Trading uses a European HR model and thus requires everyone (to my knowledge) to sign a 4 year internal position contract (longer if in management) which cannot be broken without the support and approval of your direct supervisors. This often leads to pigeonholing.
Shell Trading is one of the more technically advanced organizations I have worked for. Most every employee receives their own laptop and have the option to work remotely a few times a month as needed, which is great when you are sick. There are also many technically adept professionals - and even business analysts - embedded in many teams which is great for those with a project management mentality seeking to expand on their craft.
Since Shell Trading is comprised of such a competitive culture, back-stabbing and the blame game is all too common. But like all organizations, there are also many great talented professionals so you have to take the bad with the good.
As far as my opinion on management, the Trading and Supply leadership team is amazingly talented, sharp, forward-thinking and great to interact with. However, their supervisory underlings seem to have their own agenda and can be cold and crass with their own subordinates.
ProsFree lunches from time to time, opportunity to work remotely, Energetic internal culture
Customer Service Associate / Cashier | Elk Grove, CA | Mar 24, 2015
A fast paced service station
I worked the morning, afternoon and graveyard shifts. The graveyard shift is usually quiet. There is enough time to get everything stocked and cleaned before the next shift started at 6 AM. This shift helped my manage my time when things are a little slow.
The morning and afternoon shift tended to be very busy with some down time between customers. There have been times when you can get the bulk of your daily duties as cashier done, but not everything. During this time of day, the main things to watch for was shoplifting. I learned to watch the store when the boss is out.
This job taught me to remain calm in a variety of different situations. To be watchful at all times, in case of health/safety hazards, shoplifters, and people who speed through the parking and filling areas. With the different people who came into the store, and my co-workers, I also learned that it is best to try to understand other people. People of different nationalities can bring new knowledge about something that you know about, and teach you something new.
The hardest part of the job would be not having any breaks. As the only clerk on sight at any given time, you have to be present all the time. It gets a little tiring, so you have to make sure not to get bored. As only one person is on shift at a time, there is always something to do.
The most enjoyable part of the job (to me) was the occasions when a customer would come in, and he/she would be in a foul mood. I would try to listen, and speak to

I DID ENJOY THIS JOB, HOWEVER THERE WERE A COUPLE ISSUES THAT JUST COULD NOT BE IGNORED. THE SECURITY OF THE PLACE IS LIMITED. THERE IS A T.V CAMERA BUT IT IS NEVER RECORDING. BEING ALONE AT NIGHT WITH NO RECORDING CAMERA IS DANGEROUS BECAUSE THIS MEANS A PERSON COULD POTENTIALLY COME IN, ROBB THE PLACE AND GET AWAY THE BLURGLURY OR EVEN INJURING THE EMPLOYEE. MANAGEMENT WAS GREAT, MY BOSS WAS FROM INDIA AND A VERY HARD WORKER, AND ONE THE NICEST PEOPLE TO WORK WITH. THE WORK/LIFE BALANCE OF THE JOB WAS SOMEWHAT DIFFICULT TO DEAL WITH. THE WORST PART OF THE JOB FOR ME WAS BEING 1 OF 3 EMPLOYEES WHO WAS "STUCK" ON A SCHEDULE. NOT ONLY THAT, THE OTHER TWO EMPLOYEES CONSISTANTLY TOOK DAYS OFF AT A TIME A SHORT NOTICE FOR "VACATION" REASONS, WHILE I NEVER ASKED FOR A DAY OFF, ONLY ON ONE OCCASION, AND WHAT WAS TO ATTEND A FUNERAL OF A PARENT, AND I STILL HAD TO COME IN AND WORK THAT SAME DAY. I FOUND THAT VERY DISRESPECTFUL. THESE TWO PEOPLE WHO ALWAYS REQUESTED DAYS OFF DID NOT BY ANY MEANS EARN THESE DAYS OFF. A WEEK OF EVERY MONTH WITH ALREADY 2 DAYS OFF A WEEK, TO ME IS VERY POOR WORK ETHIC. I ALSO WAS ATTENDING COLLEGE FULL-TIME WHILE WORKING MANY HOURS, WHILE THE OTHER 2 DID NOTHING OUTSIDE OF WORK. THIS WAS MY BIGGEST ISSUE WITH WORKING HERE. LIKE I MENTIONED I LIKED MY BOSS, HOWEVER HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN MORE STRICT AND LESS AGREEABLE TO DAYS OFF. LASTLY, THINGS OFTEN WOULD STOP WORKING, AND RESULT IN VERY UNHAPPY CUSTOMERS. AT ONE TIME, I WAS SPIT ON BY A WOMAN WAS UPSET T

Great place to work that values diversity and inclusion, work life balance, and sees their staff as a valuable asset.
The people that I work with tend to be very nice and easy going, but also goal oriented. My managers have high expectations but they do not micromanage the staff. They trust in you as a capable employee, and expect you to follow through. They are also very supportive and helpful.
At Shell I have learned much more than what can be captured in a summary. I have been exposed to various levels of management with different management styles. I have learned quite a bit about stakeholder management and effective communication. I have learned a significant amount about being a part of a team, and what it takes to be successful in a global environment. I have been exposed to many cultures and learned how to more deeply appreciate differences and make people feel important.
The hardest part of the job is relying on many different groups to handle several different pieces of the process that I am in charge of. We use several different groups within Shell to handle certain pieces of the process, as well as outside vendors. It is my job to manage the process and ensure a smooth transition for our new joiners.
The most enjoyable part of my job is getting to interact with many different people and learn from them. I get to talk to many different people who have varying skill levels and in varying fields. All of them have unique personalities and unique strengths and perspectives. I very much enjoy experiencing this and learning from everyone.

Okay for a first Job.
Majority of the work day involved, but was not limited to, standing behind the counter serving customers. Other duties included making coffee, restocking and cleaning beverage dispensers, pulling stock from the back room to restock shelves, cleaning the public washroom, restocking beverage coolers, changing promotional signage and displays, emptying outside garbage bins, restocking window washing stations, sweeping the parking lot, wiping down fuel pumps, shoveling snow, washing windows, washing the floor, putting away deliveries, pricing items, counting tobacco and lottery stock, reading back fuel tank levels to fuel suppliers, dusting, etc.
As a first job, I learned the basics of time management, responsibility, cash management and handling procedures, and how to operate transactions.
As a franchise business, our owner acted as management, and he tried his best to address our concerns despite being the owner and manager of several other stations. This sometimes became an issue, however; as he wasn't always available at times requiring immediate intervention, or when customers or suppliers asked to speak to the manager. One system of interacting with management, which I really enjoyed, especially since it was unknown when he would be in to discuss issues, is that we kept a daily communication log (just a simple notebook) at the counter entrance that employees would read over at the start of the shift, often containing notes of the importance of certain tasks to be co

A vile concoction of abusive customers, incompetent (Head) management and subterfuge
The total lack of any human emotion, empathy and logic from the owner was awful.Staff were treated with no regard to personal well-being or health then expected to 'get on with it'. Within the Thomas retailing ltd cluster of Shell petrol stations, stay well away. The massive responsibility has been handed down time and time again to management that has no clue what they should do or how shop work is like.
I was working on my own for the most part, eight hour shifts on an A road. 06:00 - 14:00 or 14:00 - 22:00 No breaks, no help, faulty equipment and abusive customers. They'd block doors, block entrances or exits, come in the wrong way and break stuff then hurl all sorts of abuse back when anything didn't go their way. GOD FORBID they have to wait any length of time. Now I never got attacked, death threats were plentiful but my friend who worked there ended up taking time off, he was assaulted five times in the seven months he was there. Management couldn't care less.
The shift pattern should have been two early shifts, then two lates and then you get two days off. Not when anyone shows up, you're written down for it, guilt tripped or you're the soul member of Shell. For a couple months we had lost most of our employees, one was now site manager, the cover left and my friend was taking time off for personal matters. Thomas retailing refused to hire anyone else, we were not allowed to, its not in the budget you see, head management refused to even visit our site most the
Shell India is a worst company to work for if one is looking for career progression and job security
Shell claims work life balance and full time regular employment but it actually like a fixed period contract with high risk of job insecurity - every employee has to look and apply for new job within Shell after fixed period (max 4 years) like finding a new employment and one has to leave company if unsuccessful even after individual performance rating is excellent. By design, Company hide this unique internal policy from the prospective employee before joining Shell India otherwise good talent (specially experienced professional from Oil & Gas Public sector) will shy away from the company.
Shell India want to hire best talent (renowned experienced professionals, IIT graduates) but provide no job security. These best talents are fired at any time without any logical reason. Shell believes in hire and fire policy but is not transparent enough to say in open. For example, Shell India hired fresh IIT graduate to honour their campus commitment but will also fires their senior from previous years at the same time to keep the number in check. Shell also claims career progression for employee but there are many examples where excellent experienced profession are forced to leave company jeopardizing their career ambitions.
Shell India should be fair and transparent to the prospective employee to share their hidden policy (no job security) to apply afresh for new job within Shell after fixed period so that the prospective employee can make a conscious decision to join or not. T
