Suffocating corporate culture experience
I applied for an Artwork Coordinator position, and matched some of the job description with my graphic artist background/career of more than 26 years. However, there was a lot that seemed not a match. They wanted an interview, and I voiced my thoughts on what didn't match, and they actually still wanted me to come in, and were excellent in communicating about it. When I took time for an interview, it seemed the online description was not accurate, and it seemed much more of a match, and it was one of the best interviews I've ever had. I actually enjoyed talking with them. They seemed very excited to hire me, as they got back to me with an offer the next day. It appeared to be, while large in corporate size and culture, not the "bad" kind, and an office of some great folks. Pay was great, benefits superb, so I took the job. Unfortunately, my initial "gut" feeling was right, and the online (Indeed.com) job description was actually accurate, and then the job seemed to keep changing once I was on board. Managers moved around, and it was confusing as to who was in charge of what. People I worked with that initially seemed great turned out not to be, and there was at least two instances of broken trust with information shared, and initial agreements. I became constantly second guess, was under nearly constant pressure to conform to their incredibly stifling and intrusive corporate culture. Much time was wasted in company and team meetings. The whole system, corporate engine, goal

Micromanaged. No Common sense approach. "Cut-throat-hearsay&duck and dodge" City.
(Electrician's View) More of a reactive approach than proactive approach. Not innovative at all and ingenuity skills are next to none. Day shift have 4 electricians. Night shift have one and one mechanic. There are A,B,C,D shift with A&C being days and B&D being nights. All 12 hours shifts except 3 of the day shift electricians are 8 hours. A typical day is hearing the latest gossip of who couldn't fix what and who is not doing what. Maintenance shop has more of an I mind frame than team. Everybody wants the be a Supervisor. The electronic devices you troubleshoot are German. From the schematics all the way to the indicating lights. Green in the US indicates on/running and red--off/not running. Well it's opposite in that plant. Not an Allen Bradley in sight PLCs, drives, nothing (something they fail to mention in the interview). Everything is foreign. Other than setting the basic parameters to drives or a HMI, you're basically just a parts changer. They have electrical contractors in their doing the in-depth work. The average age is about 45. So they are set in their ways. You cant suggest nothing nor tell them anything (fellow electrician). Cant trust the turn over you get at the beginning of the shift for reasons either due to them lacking the knowledge and theory of electricity & electronics and how it is applied or them just flat out lying to make you look bad. You are on a point system. Doctor's excuse or not you will be pointed. Only at the discretion of your superviso

Don't rock the ship or you will not last
When I started working for this company, I was very excited. I was tasked with turning around an under-performing facility, which I did. I was promised things that I assumed would be delivered as I had delivered on my end. When the timeline came and passed for what I had been promised, I followed up to be snubbed by the HR group basically calling me a liar. I had to continually defend myself from an overzealous HR group that did not like me because I was not afraid to speak my mind. There was an accusation by a disgruntled previous employee that led to an HR visit. I had to PROVE my innocence. I was told by HR that the only reason I was keeping my job is because I had proof that I was wrongly accused. (it's obviously guilty until proven innocent in this company). I, and other co-workers, were passed over for promotions that were given to less qualified people who had a closer relationship to the "boys club" as it is commonly referred to back in Dalton, GA After all of this and having given blood, sweat and tears to this company for years, I decided to leave. It was one of the best decisions I have made in my life. The company pays higher than the market average, but in the long run, it is not worth it. They treat middle managers as if they are expendable and worthless. I work in a much more fast paced and demanding environment now and my stress level is half of what it was when working at Shaw because I am no longer concerned about having to walk on egg shells

Has the potential to be a good plant if shaw executives fire the whole managment team.
First off management/hr is non existant at this plant. They walk by you without speaking to you as they think they are some sort of gods who are to important to notice the little guys who keep the plant afloat. They only bow down to the drivers like little puppets. When I started off there was absolutely no training whatsoever. You have to learn on your own or quit. Employees refuse to help someone new and will talk about you because you do not know what your doing. All of their equipment is old and broken. Employees moral is very low. Sometimes they would speak to you and other times they ignore you and act like a bunch of fakes. Turn over rate is pretty high due to the lack of training. Leads do not lead. They have been there for years so they do not care if you succeed or not. They complain when you take a day off like it's they end of the world. First shift has all the pre-madonnas, and gets favoritism over 2nd or 3rd so be prepared to bow down to that shift. They even have a family who works there who all have the cushy office jobs with high salaries. Talk about hooking people up, that's what they do here hook the people they know up. Also almost all the truck drivers complain for anything and everything you do during the loading process, and they tend to walk around like they are high and mighty. I only lasted about a month but leaving was the best decision I made. I now do not feel like a useless zombie in that terrible toxic workplace.
ProsGood pay
ConsNo leadership, bad morale, cant succeed unless you kiss butt.

Shaw used to be something not anymore
When I started with Shaw, I felt that it was a REALLY good place to work. You meet so many that have been with the company 15, 25, 40+ years. That speaks volumes to me. As time went on I started to see the many flaws within the company. There is O!!!!! ZERO growth opportunities with customer service. Depending on (who you know, who your kids went to school with, what church you’re from, and LARGELY if you’re of the fair skin tone) you have more chances of advancing. And by advancing you can be a lead, and I’m very rare cases a supervisor. Shaw gets on these kicks where they want to re-vamp the culture. I can’t tell you how many times we received emails about “diversity, inclusion, candor, etc. The effort was good for about a year, after that those ideas meant nothing. I will say the company improved some when it comes to the “ Good ole boy” thinking. Many of those who thought and accepted this nonsense have retired, a few still remain. Everything is unnecessarily complicated even using your vacation days. My biggest problem with Shaw is they don’t care about their employees. They pretend they do, but behind closed doors you’re just an employee id#, you are replaceable at any moment. This company will casually lay you off or fire you, without any consideration for all your hard work, overtime, dedication, and performance. I despise this company. They aren’t what they used to be and everyone knows it. Hopefully they’ll be brought out by another competitor before long.

Productive workplace but poor job/life balance
A typical work day at Shaw consisted of unloading trucks, loading trucks, answering phone calls, paperwork for route drivers, inventory on a weekly basis and maintaining a clean warehouse. I learned many things while working here because it was my first full time job. The amount of responsibilities I had, quickly formed me into an adult. The hardest part of the job was the schedule. It was a Sunday thru Thursday 12PM-8:30pm schedule. The only problem was that I never managed to get off on time or within an hour of my scheduled time because the lack of help. With a young baby at home it was very hard to enjoy it while working 12 hours due to stacking too many responsibilities on one employee. I did learn many good things at this job. My computer skills increased drastically within the first year due to all the reports and emails I handled. My knowledge of Excel has also icereased drastically. ALl my co workers were very friendly and easy to get along with. The company took good care of its employees by occasionally buying lunch or hosting events such as: family day at the zoo, basketball at the park and dinners at nice restuarants. The only problem I had was the employee number to work amount ratio. I love to take on as much as I can and prove that I am going to be a liable part of the team but I also am not looking to be consumed by my job and not have any time with the family.
ProsGreat People, great pay and benifits
ConsLong days and weekend work

Good company/ Lots of Drama with employees
Everyone starts out as a level one, and once you learn all the jobs in that skill block then you can go to a level 2 which is a higher pay. Now what they DON'T tell you in orientation, is that you can only move to a level 3, which is an even higher pay grade, if there's an opening for a level 3 on your team that you're assigned to when you're hired. Because they're can only be a certain amount of level 3's per team. And the most senior employees already have the level 3 spots on lock. Only if someone quits, gets fired or moves to another shift, will there be a level 3 opening. And if you're lucky enough to get a 1st shift slot you WILL be stuck at a level two forever, because there's a long line of people ahead of you with they're bid in for a level 3 on 1st shift! Now with that said it's a good company to work for with fair management, average benefits and good work life balance. HOWEVER the employees are very cliquish and High schoolish. There are non stop rumors and gossip, drama and bullying! Everyone is single once they punch that time clock rather they're married or not. Employees are coupled up or trying to get coupled up. There's a lot of jealousy over who's messing around with this dude or girl OR supervisor. Corporate has been down to investigate all kinds of complaints. etc. So with that said if you can come to work and be all about your business and go home, you may be ok with working here. Good Luck!
ProsSet schedule, holidays off
Consbenefits, no sick days or personal days off, work place drama

Not like it was when Bob Shaw owned it
It used to be if you worked hard and tried hard you had a chance to get a better job in the industry by moving up into management or office. Seniority used to be valueable, but it is not anymore. It has become almost impossible at the Samples division for that to happen because they have eliminated so many positions and they've also changed the rules and you can't move from one department to another unless there's no one else in a department that wants the jobl. Now, there are people getting recalled from a 2cnd shift job to a first shift job instead of only being recalled on the shift you got bumped from. This shouldn't be happening when you have people with more seniority who have been trying to go from 3rd or 2cnd shift to first shift for years. You now have a person on 1st shift with say, 10 years and people on other shifts with 30. It's not the individual's fault obviously, it's management. It's as if they are trying to eliminate the older employees. Management changes and makes the rules to suit themselves and hard work is no longer rewarded. You have certain people who practice unsafe acts everyday and for whatever reason are allowed to continue doing so and do not have to work hard or follow everyday rules, like others, If you don't have a college degree you are nothing but a machine. It's almost like Obama has done to this country as far as advancement is concerned. Socialism maybe?
Prosit's a paycheck
Consnothing to look forward to or be proud of.

It depends, in the Alabama plant we are now running 252 positions per operator in twisting and it is nightmarish. Seldom do we get breaks and when we do the job might as well be on fire when we get back. If you get lucky and get put on a 168 position job its pretty reasonable.
