Information Systems Technician | Kingwood, TX | Sep 10, 2014
Poor employer
Raises were chump change. Daily grind was report to work, only had around 30 minutes to drive to customers house, trouble shoot internet connection, fix connection problems, then on to next customer. Supervisors made it almost impossible to continue education at local college due to rotating shift. Manager did not even want employees eating lunch at the office.
ProsA pay check.
ConsBarely any overtime, little to nothing raises, no upward mobility.

Not the correct company
This is a different company with the same name. So I cannot speak about the company you are asking about, as this in not the actual Shaw Media that I worked for.

Best place to work.
I loved my bosses, had a few over my years, loved the freedom and christmas parties.....we had golf tournaments and bbq's. I was able to travel and make up my own schedule. I wish I could have stayed, made a massive mistake moving.
Prosstock options, pension, pay, bbq's, golf tournaments, christmas party.
Consworking outside.

Fast paced and very tight knit company
This company is like a family, everyone is very tight knit, and close to one another. Each department works hard and is very dedicated.

Care more about bottom line than employees
Upper management positions typically don't have a good idea of what happens on a daily basis and the amount of work involved in order to progress through each day. The culture of the job can be tedious and at times a bit repetitive. But admittedly having the time flexibility throughout the day is a nice perk. Other than that there is no room for advancement or raise opportunities even though myself and colleagues alike have inquired numerous times.
ProsGood time flexibility
ConsMicro management, over worked and under paid

Working for Shaw is like being back in high school all over again.
You are required to show up 15-30 minutes early so you can be pre-signed into the computer you will be working on for the day. From there, you are micromanaged every second of the day. The schedule you get compared to anyone else is based upon how many calls you take, as well as how many of those calls end up having the customer call back with a small portion of tenure. This makes the schedule change more frequently than some peoples underwear and hard to plan ahead with. You are expected to actively show improvement in your KPI's and make progress towards other positions in the company, but are expected you use your own time to do most of the career development. The company revolves around the relationships between their employees so when it comes to applying to other positions, you are better off making friends with everyone and applying rather than going above and beyond in your work. Management deals with employee issues as though we were back in high school - I was suspended for 2 days for using a bad word in a private conversation 1.5 weeks after it happened that stopped me from being promoted to another department and then again 3 weeks later for a yet another single sarcastic sentence after being insulted myself.

Inexperienced management
Difficult to make Shaw a career when there is no structured career planning. I experience junior management and no strategic guidance from executive management.

sell your soul
It is all about the numbers and sell , sell, sell. If you do not produce then you will be let go. The departure of many reps ads to the heavy work load. Supervisors are promoted because of who they know and if they drank enough of the company cool aid. Again, an identity crisis as cable and phone dying. Expect the layoffs every 4-6 years.

They had a basketball court outside
Lots of time on the phone. Lots of meetings and feedback from supervisors. Very goal oriented, however the overall direction changed rapidly, so you have to be very flexible.
