IT Manager | Independence, MO | Jun 2, 2021
Strong community connection and great long-term career opportunities
As a mid-level leader, I've always felt encouraged, supported, and challenged to focus on leadership and staff goals that support our mission. I've been fortunate to have had amazing leaders and mentors throughout my career at Sentara. I've essentially been given the autonomy to create my own path and enjoy working at Sentara every day. In order for Sentara to grow beyond its current capabilities, a cultural change towards agility to execute on projects will be necessary with a focus on centralizing governance and prioritization to reduce duplicative efforts, costs, and truly take advantage of their scale.
ProsExcellent benefits (Medical, Dental, 403b, WorkPerks)
ConsNo vertical career advancement. Always brought in externally

Sentara Healthcare is a good place to receive experience.
No pension for new employees. 403B is still available. They have also decreased coverage for medical and increased premiums. Despite having merged with 2 additional health insurance companies.

Hard Job
A typical day consisted of transporting patients to the hospital, taking vitals, maintaining life support. I enjoyed talking with the patients because they all had different experiences that they shared with me. I learned how to control my emotions in an emergency. The hardest part of the job was when a patient was hurt and you worried extremely about the well fare of that particular patient. My co workers were very well informed on how to handle situations, so i felt at ease working with them.

Happy Work Environment
Management was transparent for the most part, just a lot of politics going on every day. Co-workers always in an upbeat and positive mood, benefits are excellent. The staff in the entire facility made going to work worth while.

Questions And Answers about Sentara Healthcare

Why did you leave your job at Sentara Healthcare?
Asked Mar 15, 2017
I worked for Rehab Services. Management play a lot of head games and use manipulation to get what they want. If management didn't like you, they would find a reason to fire you. The Performance evaluation system is a joke. The management is very lazy when doing the evaluations, and no matter how hard you work, it's never reflected above a rating of 3. The morale is very low and thetes a high turnover rate. I wouldn't recommend anyone to work in that department.

Management at the corporate level is a joke. If you get on managers bad side they will find a reason to get rid of you. Then use their position to get it passed through the grievance process.
