If the managers don't like you your screwed
Basically the job security is not great either the managers always standing over you when they have nothing better to do I would stay away personally if you want a job where you go up the ladder for progression I would avoid screwfix.

Stay away if you can
If you are lucky enough to work at a store with a good group of people then it can be an ok job all be it a physical one, be prepared to walk a lot. Just don't view it as a long term prospect as it has a high turn over of staff and is very by the book and no matter how good you are at your job or position if you make a mistake don't expect to be there long. And don't expect any recognition for any extra effort that you make but if you are looking for a job where you can go in do your hours and leave at the end of the day and not care about it Screwfix is the place. The managers are very hit and miss as they usually get rid of the competent ones and promote the useless ones. In short don't expect much and you will be fine and don't expect to be treated as an individual.

Not a permanent job solution
Although this is a company known for having happy employees and a laid back work place I don't agree with it being one for advancement. It is based on favouritism of staff and not your actual skill, working for screwfix i soon realised that the management teams do not mesh well with the service assistants and do not work as hard as they should. If you are looking for a workplace that will take you seriously when you wish to advance then I highly recommend that you look for employment elsewhere, however if you wish to breeze along or as a short term job solution then it is ideal. I found that the very obviously incompetent and incapable employees were the ones to progress and not the hard workers. Very unfortunate as all in all is not a bad company to work for its just the store management teams that spoil it.the benefits from the company are good and is a mixed workplace of feeling laid back while still having plenty to keep you occupied.
ProsFriendly environment, quite an easy flowing job
Very very hard work with poor pay and small hourly contracts.
Inconsistent start times making it difficult to organise personal life. but regular part time hours paid at slightly above minimum wage. Various mundane tasks, with an expectation of continuous above and beyond effort. I almost always go home exhausted, and although my manager regularly praises me I get no more money than the majority of my far less enthusiastic colleagues.
The most enjoyable part of this job for sure is the journey home,
Work with excellent people. Management changes always cause am issue as they tend to shift people round once they get a rythm but it works for me and my family and has all the flexibility required
It's nothing like what they make out! They make any monkey a manager and most pervs assistant managers and slack bum lickers supervisors. They pay peanuts don't pay for overtime. Want u there earlier than your shift and u finish late if locking up. Talk a good game but don't follow through oor have a clue, blind leading blind. Very clicky if your face don't fit your pushed out. Tedious warehouse work, pathetic 1000 question customer service that customers hate we didn't have breaks for first year! Management think they are superior! And most are half witts. If you have half a brain don't bother they won't like you! Could have been good if manager wasn't such a female dog
Prosgoing home at end of shift

Fast growing company with great progression opportunities
Great place to work, fantastic team ethic and some great customers. The progression program is excellent and the opportunities to move up the ladder (no pun intended) is there for anyone willing to put in the work.
Hardest part of the job was the inconsistent IT department, Because the business was expanding so rapidly we had to rely on systems that could not cope.
Area management where hit and miss, not always following hr policy,
I enjoyed the business because you did get recognition for a job well done, A typical day would involve Customer service, Stock and cash management and training for staff, and a drive to meet your targets
ProsDiscount, Bonus scheme, recognition
ConsWorkplace dusty, hot in the summer. cold in the winter
A company run with an atmosphere of distrust with cliques favoured by middle managers, vying for attention as the company rapidly grows. Little to no support.
No feeling of 'team' unless you are part of the favoured clique.
Staff on the whole great although lowly paid and due to low levels of staffing hard worked, working with the store crew the only enjoyable part of the business.
Customer service is seen as a script at the till, and as actively jumping on customers as they walk through the door and trying to upsell to the point of customer irritation.
Audits designed not to highlight area's of improvement but as a stick.
If there is a not to work don't work there. I got the sac unfairly and unjustifiably. Yes I did get something wrong but buy no way enough to lose my job. They are buy the book only. You will be a number and only a number to them you are not a person. We all get i wrong some times hint hint 23/01/14 WE ALL DO!
ProsGood work life balance you will do your hours and no more even a Manager
ConsBy the Book only. You will be a number and number a easy to replace no thought on you or your life.
arrive at work brief the team on priority daily tasks, discuss sales with the team, daily paperwork, discuss previous shift with previous duty manager (supervisor), check emails and act upon them. I have learnt how to run a store independently to work to KPIs, to keep the store running to store standards, to get the store to an auditable standard (running through audits fortnightly and making sure everything is to Company Standards). To maintain and exceed given targets.
The most enjoyable part of my job was to get the team motivated when we have been without a store manager for weeks/months and to get them all working together and running the store as it should be run.

I would work for them again if the opportunity arose
I worked there for about a year, along that year i met a fair few good co-workers and also a few good customers that i still keep in contact with. all though towards the end of the job the hours were cut so i could not live on the money
wouldn't personally advise this place as they would mistreat their staff expecting them to stay until midnight if needed and still be back at work for 6am the day after only giving you 6 hours between shifts as well as if the manager did not have a personal life friendship with an employee he would make you work the worst shifts possible as well as make false accusations about you as an employee with no evidence when requested to back his accusations up.

Fun place to work with relaxed and engaging staff
Growing up I didn't know what I wanted in life, but I always had a knack for tlretail. Originally I worked at Argos, but later moved to Screwfix under contract issues. After working for the company for a year I had the chance to develop a raport with both the customers and the staff. It was like a second family. The staff are supportive and assist you with little to no expectations in return. The managers and supervisers quickly become close friends and regular customers become allies. The company wilingly accepts growth up the courprit ladder and promotes growth and achievement. Regardless of educational achievement, Screwfix rewards a person for who they are. Arguably, they only pay what is required of them, which to an extent is true. But those who choose to make a career out of the company are rewarded for their loyalty and have a strong foothold in a growing company which has already beaten the 1 million pound mark and is continuing to grow. I oersonaolook forward to my growing progress with ang ever rewarding company.

Fun, growing company
Day to day would be serving customers, maintaining the warehouse and putting away delivery.
I became warehouse manager designate, in which I learnt the full running of the warehouse from health and safety, to stock efficiency, to training staff in the warehouse and supervising delivery operations.
Couldn't fault the management team, they were very supportive on both personal and professional levels, and they listened to what staff had to say.
I worked with ages from 16-72 and each person was a pleasure to work with, whilst working we could all still have a joke to keep each other going.
I believe the hardest part of the job was serving customers who didn't understand what they needed and I had to figure it out from what information they gave me.
The most enjoyable part of the job I think was seeing regular customers come in that we had good rapport with, and them asking "How are you today?" and smiling, as this shows they are happy and comfortable with us, but also cared about the staff as people, not just someone who worked in the store.
ProsRelaxed working environment
ConsNo full time hours available to Service Assistants
I enjoyed working at Screwfix apart from the poor management they had and majority of the people who worked there. The job kept me busy and I felt it was a safe environment just really unorganised and lacked communication between work colleagues.
I felt some colleagues were rude and bossy, also they mostly spoke down to people including customers.

Productive but fun environment to work in
A typical day at Screwfix wuld include serving customers (payments, collections, refunds/exchanges, general assistance with products), picking orders, putting delivery away, counting the stock in the warehouse for regular checks, restocking the shop floor, sorting out returns/damaged products and general cleaning/tidying.
I have learnt a lot of new skills working in this environment, mainly how to speak to the general public in certain and different ways and working better as part of a team.
Management is fine. It could be better as there seems to be lack of work happening and only sticking to their set roles but also favouritism.
My co-workers are like family to me. They welcomed me into their team with open arms and now being one of the original team members, I am doing the same with the new members of staff so they can feel how I felt when I first joined the company.
They are one of the main reasons why I would not like to leave the store and company.
I feel the hardest part of the job is the unsociable hours and lack of equally in the branch I work in.
Management always try their best to make the rotas fair but most of the time, if any members of staff would like to plan anything outside of work, most of us are not allowed to take the time off of work together.
It always seems like the female members of the store always get left out on the tills and are not capable to put away delivery and other tasks when this is one of my favourite parts of the job.

Friendly, driven colleagues
I have loved my time so far at Screwfix... a hardworking volunteer with space for fun too! Good management with some engaging Leaders and fantastic development opportunities.
under awful management, problems with wages, near impossible to book holidays as communication was terrible with other staff members
I had a very early shift, it was hard to get in, as you would have to wait for the manager to let you in. Then your pay would be reduced because it took them all this time to open the doors.
Once in, they would not have they right equipment, usually damaged, like the hoover was not working properly. Making your job a lot harder.
I worked here for a year, but never saw my supervisor. it was always hard to book holidays as he was never there to approved them!!
I have underpaid on most pay slips. Hence the reason why I left.

Questions And Answers about Screwfix
What is the interview process like at Screwfix?
Asked Sep 6, 2019
Depends on who’s doing the interview. Most will just read the generic, structured competence questions regardless of your career backround.
Answered Feb 9, 2021
Reasonably informal with customer focused questions.
