Shift Coordinator | Eureka, CA | Aug 29, 2020
Most toxic work enviroment i have ever experience- even the military wasnt this bad
Toxic work environment: sexist and racist people in the organization I worked for in Eureka, California. A LOT of nepotism. Benefits ( health insurance and tuition assistance) made me willing to tolerate the work retirement-once that was completed, I left the company.
Prosbenefits/tuition assistance
Consracist and sexist work environment

Excellent place to work and an amazing company
Love working with PGE Apply yourself and you will not regret it. PG&E is an amazing company to work for. Don’t get discouraged if you don’t receive a call or email right away, just keep applying for the position you desire and that you may be qualified for.
ProsGreat support all around
ConsNone, all about what you make it.

Non contemporary company
Top down traditional organization. Limited employee input and involvement. Risk and change averse. Hierarchical. Continuously changing top leadership. Different culture especially for women.

Poor management. Do not value staff's efforts.
I found management very micromanaging, but no inherent interest in employees success. Their appraisal program is from the 1960s. They have little interest in employees contributions either.

Depending on your boss, good place to work. One boss was immature and valued here say more than direct and open discussion.
Good place to work if the boss is fare and open to discussion. Hard to become full-time if you are a contractor. You have a better chance of success if you work directly with the hiring manager and keep third party vendors away from your work. The SMEs were great.

Awesome benefits
They pay extremely well. Being able to move around in the company is awesome too. Only thing that sucks is the customers. They HATE PG&E. Call center is the worst department for PG&E employees but they offer a good amount of overtime if you're interested in that. Pays very well.
ProsGift cards, free food, great management

Used to be a great company to work for, not so much anymore
If you like to be constantly behind the pay band, overworked, and underappreciated then please work here. This used to be a great place to work but all levels of management have been corrupted. Maybe the new CEO can change things, but it's not looking great.

Great place to work. Good management. Great engineering tools. Great planning. Treats employees with respect and cares about their well being and development.

Initially very good
Until a reorganization occurred I was very pleased and positive about my role. After a new Senior Director, who was subsequently removed, led our operation and displaced most of the existing professional staff with non professionals who were promoted over the incumbents I soon returned to contacting.

Not as bad as expected
It was a good company for a utilities company. If you're looking for a start-up vibe with full autonomy, don't work here. They are very compliance driven and need to follow all the rules and regulations as a utilities company out to be.

Questions And Answers about Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E)

How would you describe the pace of work at Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E)?
Asked Sep 29, 2016
Very fast paced. Little time for a work/life balance. Depending on position. Managers or Team leads are under a lot of pressure as are customer service reps. No time to know your co-workers.
Answered Nov 29, 2018
It's a very organized company

If you were to leave Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E), what would be the reason?
Asked Mar 28, 2017
If you want to feel like you're in High School again, apply for contact center jobs. Managers run the show. Metrics galore. You're a number sitting in a chair. They "claim" to value all through diversity and inclusion? More like exclusion if you're not a "favorite".
Answered Jun 22, 2020
Stigmatization runs deep in one particular bay area yard. An employee who follows the rules, refuses to take shortcuts, and disagrees with what others believe is owed to them can become an outsider within days. By using the term "clicky" I am expressing the attitude of employees involved in a misconduct racket who will mischaracterize others to a front line supervisor. At the supervisor level their are common "vegas room only" meetings held to discuss how to drive out those that aren't popular without ever considering the safety record or screwing off by the accusers. This kind of subjective management makes those who actually believe in core values as a foundation for their work environment feel very lonely. Once one of the good ol boys is promoted to a supervisor all bets are off. A foreman who doesn't fit in will get 1 less guy then other foreman. Keys to trucks needed while a truck is down will not be made available to you. I've been told by a supervisor he can live with being spineless and keeping his job rather than standing up for what's right and changing the dishonest culture. soon all bargaining unit employees will fall in step untill you realize it's time for a new yard. If your an employee who is ok with the boss's favorites coming in late with shoe laces untied, shirt unbuttoned and a starbucks in their hand while the same supervisor expects apprentices to be on time or early then this is the right place for you. If your a former marine it will be the exact inverse of an honorable career.

What is the interview process like at Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E)?
Asked Aug 12, 2016
The process is quite long. It took over 3 months from beginning to end. While I was not offered the job I have to say I am not impressed with my experience. After the 2nd (and final) interview I was told the decision would be made in 2 weeks, however I had to follow up multiple times for an update. The hiring manager's response was I would hear from HR. This went on for over THREE weeks. I only found out from the website that I was not selected. I did not receive any feedback from HR or the hiring manager for the reason. In my opinion this is very unprofessional.
Answered Sep 15, 2020
PG&E follow the STAR behavioral model in asking the interviewer to follow. A question you will get is around safely. Have an example ready to answer using the star model. The same questions are asked my every candidate and they are all scored based on the answers given. It is a very fair model they use.

In what cases does PG&E do drug testing? On recruitment? Randomly? Does it depend on the position?
Asked Jul 27, 2018
During the hiring process and randomly. Even Call Center reps get randomly tested which is ridiculous. Sitting behind a computer and repairing a pipeline another similar safety issue is NOT the same, but they sure do love to "randomly" select the same people month after month.
Answered Jun 22, 2020
Some drivers will be randomly tested several times a year in spite of never failing one in twenty years... Most drivers will never see 5 random tests in that same amount of time.

If you were in charge, what would you do to make Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) a better place to work?
Asked Feb 6, 2018
Stop promoting employees into management positions just because they are your friend and promote based on proven skills and LEADERSHIP!
Answered Aug 21, 2020
PG&E is a century-old regulated monopoly. Its best interests do not lie necessarily in innovation or new ways of doing things. Even when there is a strong public need for change, it is a large organization with tremendous organizational inertia and change agents are rarely rewarded for their effort without applying considerable political savvy. Don't make waves if you plan on sticking around.
