People go there to retire
Very political since it's not a competitive industry. Don't go there if you want to remain at the leading edge of your field. They do spend money on professional development.
ProsNo requirement to put in long hours
ConsDifficule to be recognized as exceptional

Good Pay but it comes at a price
the only way to move up in management is to get transferred to a new location every 1 1/2 to 2 years. Also, you belong to the railroad and are on call every other weekend. Lots of work hours and bad work/life balance.

Very poor managed
Terrible place to work, management is usually fresh out of college with no field experience, union is soft and just bows down to the company without letting union members vote on situations
ProsPay was decent if you don't mind being away all the time
ConsBasically everything except pay

Deception
Horrible Company, deceptive management, Lots of back stabbing and gossip from upper management. Work environment is hostile on all levels. Upper management is non supporting.

The organization is in severe cost cutting mode.
There are many other better places to work within the railroad industry than Norfolk Southern. They are in the process of trying to catch up with the rest of the industry. They're one of the only railroads that continue to do their own locomotive maintenance and that's cost them dearly as the locomotives have become much more complex and NS did not keep up with the training of employees. That is why they are typically last among all the other railroads in operating ratio which determines the profitability.

Retirement
I worked for the company for 27 years and 7 months. I have been discarded as if my life does not matter and they have not appreciated the hard work that I have put in for them. I am left with a feeling of emptiness. Will I ever be given the opportunity to complete my 2 years and 5 months to achieve full retirement benefits? I have been a faithful and loyal employee with good attendance and quality work ethics. I have been dedicated to safety as the shop and terminal safety committee chairperson. I feel totally betrayed by this company so they can satisfy their stockholders.
ProsBest retirement program available if you are able to complete 30 years of employment.
ConsManagement is corrupt and treats the employees bad in order to make upper management happy.

Productive with lots to learn!
Great place to learn, colleagues and people are well read and pleasant. focus on work is a lot, HR activities are minimum.
Swanky office, relaxed work culture. Timings are strict.
