Security Officer- Nike Global Security, Absolutely Toxic Work Environment
Nike Global Security has the distinction of being the most dysfunctional and toxic department I have ever worked at. The department has a long term deeply embedded obsession over the most unimportant minutiae while real security issues are ignored or not even recognized.
Management which refers to itself as “The Leadership” is made up almost entirely of individuals with little professional background or distinction who were some of the lowest performers as officers. There are a few bright exceptions but not enough to change the dynamic. If you show concern for your staff, report supervisors for abuse, or do anything to give “The Leadership” any reason to question your absolute loyalty your career potential is done forever at Nike.
There is no seniority system which means you can never obtain a better schedule of your choosing even if you have been there 20 years. Brand new employees are often given prime shifts with weekends off while long term employees with excellent work records get mid-week days off on graveyard. Your shift will change about once a year unless you are on “The Leadership” good guy list then you might get to keep your shift for a decade or more.
The annual Nike Coaching for Excellence review process is supposed to be a fair process, tailored to help each employee become successful and reward hard work based on specific criteria. Your annual raise and bonus is dependent upon this individualized process. On several occasions multiple supervisors in
A typical day involved generating daily lesson plans for the children, working with a team of four other co teachers in a classroom setting with a predictable schedule. The morning consisted of dropping the children off to the classroom where three tables were setup to enhance cognitive, fine motor, and mathematical thinking skills, the classroom was also available for quieter activities like reading or drawing and a climber for gross motor exploration. Followed by morning snack and recess. After recess the children would come in for whole group circle time where academic curriculum was discussed, songs were song and group readings and discussions occurred. Then small group activities were available for exploration and learning goals. Children were then given the opportunity to explore the campus on a walk, do a art activity or work in small reading and writing group which was designated by learning needs. Then lunch and nap would occur, during nap the teaching met to generate daily power point notes about the day, team meetings, lesson plan development, time schedules and classroom needs were attended to. After wake up quite activities and sensory activities were offered followed by afternoon snack, recess and pick ups.
Working in a team of four taught me to be collaborative and flexible in my teaching. I learned how to generate lessons based on what we saw the children interests were as well as how to create lessons using all of our observations and assessments. I also

Lots of opportunity to learn and a fun campus for getting out of the office, but definitely a start up environment
The Nike campus has a super appealing campus and physical work environment that the company has spent a lot of money investing in and is constantly under construction, which is also a negative, but they are forward thinking for their employees. Nike has several cafeterias and lots of options for meeting rooms and really allow you to explore around the campus when you need some time from your desk or you need to impress a client.
Nike also goes pretty far for training and entertaining its employees with large, social and collaborative workshops, or pop-up shops on the main campus, or food carts and "farmers markets" from local businesses from Portland that you normally don't have access to in Beaverton. More importantly, the workshops are very impressive and you have a lot of opportunity to grow your network, career, and knowledge, which was probably my favorite aspect of working at Nike.
Unfortunately, Nike is very much a startup culture for its size and age so it tends to latch on to an idea and go all in on this idea. This means that a lot of money and people are thrown at this idea and everything else is cut and thrown away. Nike has a pretty bad reputation around town and locals for how they treat employees, especially contractors and temporary employees, and it can be very, very difficult to get a full time position at Nike. Once you get a full time position, you end up taking a pretty serious pay cut anyways. Second, Nike teams are very siloed and management is, o

I will preface this by saying I am part of the healthiest team I've ever been on. I enjoy working with everyone there, and the secret is everyone gives their all. Not everyone has this experience at Nike, unfortunately. Like any company, it's the managers who make it! I'm proud to say I've had really good ones.
A typical day at work for me involves talking to all sorts of different people, a ton of meetings, and delegating work to over-worked people. I make plans and roll them out to my team. I enjoy leading them -- we're a low-key bunch, which is necessary for the work we're doing.
Many of us are in different time zones and nations, which is both fun and hard on the sleep schedule. Personally, I think it is rad to talk to people in India at 7am, Nederlands at 10am, and then China at 8pm. (Not all in one day for me; it is a super rare occurrence.). As a global organization, we all need to compensate for time-zones, and I know other people have much heavier schedules than me. It ultimately depends on your responsibilities.
People are very polite and I think that my greater department places a big emphasis on conduct, which I've come to appreciate, because it teaches and supports better ways of being. When leadership expects more of you and exhibits the same behaviors, it's very admirable.

Excessive use of temps, but fantastic place to work
I was given a temporary position at Nike that offered me the opportunity to learn new skills. Management wasn't perfect, but was a step up from what I'd experienced in most prior positions in that there was usually at least an effort made to work as a team and listen to all members of the team (not just those in management). Co-workers were passionate about their work, usually respectful of others, and generally made an effort to excel in their individual areas of responsibility. Finger-pointing when things went wrong, and trying to push through shoddy work when deadlines were tight were the worst behaviors I witnessed, and they were limited to a few individuals. One of the more challenging aspects of working at Nike is that their policy of hiring internally, and encouraging employees to stay in a particular role for only a few years at most, means that often times an entire group will be made up of individuals who have only been in their roles for a short time and are "making it up as they go." While this means there is a considerable amount of "re-inventing the wheel" and lost knowledge, it also means faster innovation as there is a constant influx of new people with new ideas. Unfortunately, Nike is engaging in the typical corporate strategy of using temporary labor / contractors to fill positions that are truly permanent and simply rotates individuals out after a year or so in order to avoid legal difficulties. After they could no longer extend my contract, due to the 1 y

A fun, fast paced environment with goodies to boot
Nike is a fast paced environment with many opportunities to challenge the Athletes and Coaches alike. Multitasking skills are a must as the team members will constantly be on tasks while also serving the consumer.
There's plenty of opportunity on the sales floor to maintain displays and fixtures according to company standards as well as interact with the consumer. Nike encourages the consumer to serve itself by providing clear, easy to understand product and promotional information, but it is the team's responsibility to reinforce the consumer's choice and make the shopping experience pleasant. Team members will be answering questions about the merchandise and helping the consumer decide what is best for his or her needs.
Team members working in the back of house will find plenty of opportunity to keep the store running smoothly by processing merchandise. Great care is needed to ensure that all merchandise is priced, tagged, and presented properly for a seamless transition to the sales floor. Team members also perform markdowns and daily merchandise refills.
Team members wear a single earpiece headset to maintain open communication and smooth operation.
Individuals looking to work for Nike will find that the management team is very honest, fair, knowledgeable, and energetic. Management plays to your strengths and coaches you through your weaknesses to build you into a strong team member. Management also backs you 100% through your journey to advance within the company.

Good experience, fast paced, great benefits poor management, high turnover rate,
A typical work day at Nike was very high paced. Nike is one of the busiest stores in the mall and you always have to have high energy while on the job. This is the type of environment that I like to be in. There was a very diverse group of customers which kept the job interesting. I would always get wrapped into some very interesting conversations. The biggest thing I've learned while working here is how to handle a fast-paced environment. After mastering this, I started to set the pace for the store, and other employees would work with the same intensity. I learned how to be aware of my surroundings while focusing on a specific customer. I have learned many leadership skills as well as customer service skills.
As far as management goes, at Nike there were many good things as well as bad things. All six of the managers were very good at bringing energy to the job. They always looked for different ways to make the job a competition. This led us to the point of crushing all of our goals and getting new equipment added to our store because of it. I absolutely loved the ambition of the managers. However, I did not like the rate of promotion. Very rarely would an employee within the store get promoted to a higher role. When a job needed to be filled, the managers would usually outsource. This was the cause of an extremely high turnover rate. Also, many responsibilities such as scanning employees out immediately after they clock out were lacked. It would be nor
Needs better pay, better work/ life balance, and better management
I don't have all bad things to say about Nike but they do not care about the wearhouse workers that they have in place below management. Not only do they hire mangers who do not know the business but they rely solely on the team leads/ coordinators and recon team to do all the work including their responsibilites. If a subordinate was out for the day the manager would not know how to run that position. They DO NOT promote from within on a regular basis. I was fortunate enough to advance within the third year that I was there but as far as advancing to the management team they would rather hire someone out of town/off the street to manage. Meanwhile the manager's subordinates carry them because they did not come up in the ranks therefor they do not know how the operation works. The PAY SUUUUUUUUCKS they barely start you off with a standard rate of living above the poverty rate ($10.45 per hour). Lets put it this way if you started working there in 1980 you still will only be making about 13-14 bucks an hour by the time you reach your 30 year mark. If you don't have a second income coming in you WILL NOT SURVIVE. The bonuses you get are what you should have been getting in the first first place and you are still only making under 30,000 a year in a just past entry level (v-band) position. Replacement of missing co-workers needed hardly ever happens. If someone quits or leaves in your area they will not be replaced and you are stuck with taking up their responsibilites!! When you

I no longer work at Nike and haven't for a while now. But I knew instinctively from Day 1 that I had made a mistake taking this job. Not only is Nike a "drink the kool-aid" culture - they literally said at my orientation "Just so you know, if you want to succeed here, you have to drink the kool-aid or you won't last 1 year." - No truer words were ever said.
A typical day was a typical day at a mega-corp where it's kill or be killed when trying to climb the wobbly ladder of success. No training on how to maneuver the insane matrix, management was so busy trying to sculpt their own path that they had little or no time for those below them, just a lot of weird stuff that you would think they would have dialed by now.
The hardest part was definitely dealing with my incompetent manager, who, on our very first out-of-town business trip, told me how he was pretty sure his wife would be fine with him taking a mistress (looking right at me). I almost lost my lunch. When this continued, I took it to HR, who handled the entire situation VERY poorly. They even had the nerve to say at one point "Well, your boss said you were flirting with the bartender at dinner the night before so he figured you were game." I know. I had to continue to work with the same manager I had reported as HR told me they couldn't transfer me to another department because I hadn't been there 1 year yet. I stayed for a while but couldn't take it any longer, especially once I found out my boss had be bad mouthin

My personal "Nike Experience"
The work is very repetitive and the expectant outcome is a bit ridiculous for what they are asking for. The people who have worked there the longest don't really know what they are talking about, basically, no one really knows what they are talking about at this company. Everything is unorganized. One day you will hear this, then the next day you will hear that. They LIED to me. They promised many things upon working and did not fall through with it. They get you pumped up for something that is not even worth to get hyped up about.
A company big as Nike should have gone with another company to manage their e-services because absolutely no one knows what they are doing. The work is easy, consumer get VERY annoying. The scoring system which they have set for the e-services is stupid and I don't agree with.
Typical day is sitting down at a computer and chatting with consumers in regards to their order, find a shoe in a store, or just to simply get them a return label for their order. You have the great consumers who give 0 problems and then you have the not so great consumers who will give you 99 problems and wish you'd go to H E L L. All in a days work.
You go through 4-5 computer systems while helping multiple consumers simultaneously. The work is easy but can make you grind you teeth with the expectancies they require. I definitely gained a lot of knowledge about Nike and being that person on the other side of the chat. It is all about how you word things and maki

I begin my day by greeting my team when I arrive to the store and make the cups of tea if anyone would like one. I then assess the delivery that has arrived in store and take a radio so I can communicate with my team.
I speak to the manager or head coach to find out the days targets and how we have been performing throughout the week.
I also speak to my stock room lead and find out what the targets of the day are, eg New product or a product recall which has been announced.
I complete a stock replenishment every morning before I begin the delivery.
I organise and prioritise the delivery so whether the delivery is new products or products which are replenishment I can process the items we need the most.
I make sure my area is always tidy when processing in adherence to health and safety as well as preventing items being missed or damaged.
I communicate any issues with the delivery, eg damaged stock to my team leader in the stock room any my manager.
If any new products arrive I make sure the items are processed quickly, a size run is complete and I speak to our stores product placement lead so they know a new products need to be put out on the shop floor.
I quickly reply to any requests from staff regarding clothing or footwear.

Nike's organisational culture supports business resilience and capability. Organisational culture is the combination of traditions, habits, values, and behavioural expectations among employees. Nike’s workers are given a set of instructions, rules and expectations on how to do their jobs, with consideration for their relations with customers and other employees. This approach ensures that the company maintains its corporate culture, which partly contributes to the success of the business. As one of the giants in the global athletic shoe, apparel and equipment market, Nike Inc. continues its policies and strategies to promote an organisational culture that reinforces business resilience and competence.

I worked at Nike almost a year and the only thing that held me there were the other athletes with their fun , laughs and positive energy. Other than that I feel I wasted that year working for a company that is managed by the most rude , negative, ignorant people . There were Many times when a customer would come over and ask if I’m ok after noticing how poorly I was spoken to by a manager especially the head coach ( head manager ) . It was rare to see the head coach work past 5 which was clearly above him . All employees were expected to work till 9/10 and I worked every single weekend until I left which was just behind a joke . ALL managers were the first to jump at you and be on to you about sign ups charging for bags , customer interaction, chat, the ay you were standing and so on but I would rarely ever see them doing those things themselves . If you made the smallest of mistakes you were pulled into the office and written up straight away . If you clocked in at 56 not 55 you’d have to fill in an immediate late form . Managers also felt it was beneath them to serve customers or answer the customers questions . They would radio for an athlete to come and do it for them . There would be occasions when The head coach would see something on the floor and instead of just picking it up like a normal person would he would radio for me to come and get it for him !!! Favourites were VERY apparent at Nike . The only time you could ever leave the floor was for a drink or toilet . E

Answered May 18, 2021
Pay a living wage and invest more in hourly retail employees. Investing in the community is a great thing but a billion dollar company that hasn't had to pay federal taxes the past 4 years should be paying AT LEAST $15/hr. Almost every large business/corporation has increased their starting hourly pay in the past year, many surpassing $15. Eventually there will be no one applying to work here because 5 businesses across the street are paying at least $3 more an hour. Love the company and its values but as an employee of 8 years, it's really disappointing.
