It Is a large community
My concern is the lack of support by Human Resources. Upon complaints about what I experienced as terrible management, I was turned away instead of an evaluation to vet an ongoing system that poorly reflects the potential of the institution. I ultiately resigned.
Unique work environment that is ever evolving with student needs.
NYU is unique work environment that is ever evolving due to the ever changing student population. As world event changes, student needs and concerns change as well. This requires staff to be up-to-date on current issues in order to inform best practices. The administration can be difficult to advance within as employees tend to stay for long periods of time and the work environment is highly political, however a highly motivated person can do well in this environment to progress professionally as well as personally.
Department manager, along with senior management, are bosses who enjoy pointing fingers, ordering others around, and constantly micromanaging on what you did wrong. They treat us as expendable robots. The level of write ups were absolutely ridiculous for several years; much like patrolmen trying to meet their quota for summons submissions. This was a level of harassment if I'm being frank. On a daily basis, we feel as if though management is just waiting for the right moment to retaliate whether it'd be for us speaking the truth on how we feel, or for being out sick. Some have been so scared in speaking up that they say nothing at all. I've lost count of how many times I was told my endless hard work wasn't enough. Constantly being told there aren't enough patients on the schedule yet their schedule is packed, or how we aren't answering enough calls as if though this were a call center, when it is NOT. Not to mention loads of paperwork, auths, surgical bookings, patient follow-through. We are short staffed, and management has set us up for failure; expecting "perfection" at all costs, including our risking our health. What they fail to accept is there is no such thing as perfection. We provide excellence and it is NEVER enough. To do twice the amount of work with half the amount of staff, then expect us to never make mistakes while juggling everything at once is unfair. The only thing that gets us through on a daily basis is our Supervisor. Needless to say, we aren't too thr
At NYU department of Cardiogenomics, the project was very clear: we all work to get the NYU Department of Health authorization to conduct genetic testing for Cardiac Arrhythmias.
It was intense but very productive. In less than a year all our SOPs were developed , the laboratory was fully running and operating and we got our permit to conduct genetic testing in our patients.
It was reward and amazing to contribute with our work to the understanding of the probably cause of the disease in the family we got at the NYU clinics.
When you can help with one more element to understand the originen and possible treat of a disease, you really are making a big impact on the case and the family.
NYU was a family more than a co workers , we all feel committed with the project knowing we were helping other with our efforts and job.
ProsThe spirit and solid security that were working for a noble cause
ConsThe few financial support we got to complete our project

Top school with excellent Career Services dept.
In addition to being known as a nationally ranked top undergraduate and graduate school, I can tell you from direct working experience that NYU has an outstanding career services department. Students should absolutely take advantage of these services.
Daily tasks become difficult to complete due to lack of decision making by upper management. This makes work extremely hard because I like to be able to cross things off of my list and consider the job finished, but that rarely happens.
