Good organization to do business with
I was contracted by the NYCDOE to film and edit a recap of the Big Apple Awards. Working with the DOE was a seamless experience, although when contracted to do work for the NYC government, it takes a while to get paid.

Varied work and populations, need to adapt to work conditions to do an excellent therapeutic job!
Worth 10+ years varied work experience for the retirement pension and for having made a difference in so many students’ lives! Also enjoyed helping teachers and collaborating with them in their very difficult jobs!

If your not white, your stuck.
I don’t care if it’s a city agency, if your not white, you’ll always stay at a stand still. People with no education hold the highest titles. It’s a sad joke.

Respect
I feel better now working for the DOE because the staff doesn’t get in your business, and they help you if you need them to. I would recommend this to anyone looking for meaningful work.

Pros and cons!
I clock in and report to my morning post. The day is a normal school day. Most teachers have classroom management and follow a schedule. We are responsible to keep the attendance sheets, behavior sheets, and monitor each Childs behavior according to their EIPs
Prosbenefits and job security
Consmanagement will throw you under the bus

Education
Working for the NYC DOE is a great opportunity for those looking to gain knowledge and access of how NYC public schools work. There are opportunities for training's' and learning hubs that one can become involved in as well.

Questions And Answers about New York City Department of Education

What would you suggest New York City Department of Education management do to prevent others from leaving?
Asked Mar 23, 2017
The New York City Department of Education needs immediate systemic changes and that includes, Leadership, Teachers, Paras, Cafeteria Workers, School Safety, Curriculum, Building Structure, etc. There needs to be a culture of service, professionalism, and advancement for those who earn it, and tiered training. Until the above becomes a true agenda and a reality, then change will never come. The attitude of taking the next generation to the level it requires needs attention to all of the above in detail.
Answered Oct 31, 2021
Train Principals on how they can enrich the school community, run the funding properly, and really know about the job duties/responsibilities of their Staff. Do not hire friends/cliques. Refresh Staff Skills periodically. Talk to Staff to find out their challenges. Create a caring and welcoming environment for all!

I'm scheduled to begin work as a sub paraprofessional. How long does it take to be hired as a permanent paraprofessional. Should i bring my resume to various schools?
Asked Aug 11, 2016
Please be aware before you become a sub. These supervisors (principal) do not follow the Uft contract for permanent paraprofessional. They will have you do things that a 1:1 suppose to do. When you explain your self to your union rep at your school they turn a blind eye and become deaf to your concerns. It’s better to be a sub you change schools you don’t have to be in the same school dealing with all kind of nepotism dictatorship and acrimony from staff members. The recent raise is almost making as a permanent para. If you don’t have a degree your salary will plunge becoming permanent. I understand the benefit part. The salary para makes is low income. My advice stay a sub build your own 401 k health insurance. Do Lyft and Uber during the summer or work at a summer day camp. Or sub for the DOE during the summer. The choice is yours
Answered Dec 15, 2018
Depends on you work ethic and if the principal likes your work ethic. Be on time , don't use your phone in the classroom , and most importantly, kids first. It take some longer than others but, hang in there it will happen.

What is the interview process like at New York City Department of Education?
Asked Jun 15, 2016
It depends on what position you are seeking. Both Principal and Assistant Principal positions are guided by the Chancellor’s C-30 Regulation Process. Teachers are recruited in many ways: (#1) - Sometimes through a “Demo Lesson.” (#2) - Sometimes there is such a shortage in the License Area, they take anyone with a pulse and get him/her certified over time. (#3) - Sometimes it is through a friend-of-a-friend. It depends on the Position being sought and the needs of a particular School and the regulations for that interview process.
Answered Aug 14, 2021
I was recruited by letter and by phone while I was working for NYNEX through Steadfast because I had the license and it was a shortage area.

What is the most stressful part about working at New York City Department of Education?
Asked Nov 12, 2017
The Teamwork structure is not there. Too often, if an employee shows special abilities, acumen, or a distinct skill-set, the culture is to be vampiric and use that employee’s skills and drain him/her. There is little reciprocity and too many cliques. Several employees have unaddressed mental health needs too. It is a very difficult environment to navigate and thrive in…make sure you have a support system because tough years are often embedded in a Career in the NYC Dept. of Education.
Answered Aug 14, 2021
Working with a Principal who really did not show respect or appreciation for very hard working staff in a difficult school.

Why did you leave your job at New York City Department of Education?
Asked Mar 23, 2017
I left to pursue a career in the field that I studied after getting my MS in counseling. There were no jobs as a counselor after I graduated and apparently still no open positions. There is a hiring freeze on new guidance counselors. DOE is not very informative.
Answered Aug 1, 2019
I retired from the NYCDOE in July of 2017 after working as a teacher for 15 years. This was a second career for me.
