Overall Reviews at Michaels
1.0
Be crafty, follow the procedures and expect no gratitude.
There is never enough time in the day at Michaels. They make updates and then the next day updates to the previous days updates. If you don't mind spinning your wheels it can be a fun work environment. But, if you want to be able to accomplish something and think it's done for a period of time think again. The staff in each individual store is what makes it a livable work situation. They hold each other up even when corporate is pushing down. They have gone through four CEO's in the time I was there. Until they have stability the company will struggle to keep quality employees. They need to realize that stable employees equal more sales. They also need to realize that staff are the backbone to the success and pay the staff accordingly. When management is paid less than part time workers at other big box stores there is a problem. But, it's all about the profits. If you have healthcare from another source (ie your spouse) you are ineligible for additional healthcare benefits from Michaels. The companies way of "giving back" to the store staff is to provide peanut better, jelly and bread in the break room so that their employees have a meal option over lunch or break. It is a nice thought but felt more like a slap in the face.
ProsEmployee discount is 30%.
ConsTerrible healthcare options, Poor pay rates and raises are pathetic, If you are at all successful they will drain you dry and then leave you to hang.

Productive workplace, but with the pains of a big business
Individual store culture was a positive experience, but few trusted higher management. Higher management doesn't factor in individual store size, time of year, or store location when assessing a store's performance. Corporate would rather cut your hours if your department underperforms to encourage you to quit instead of pay you severance. You could have one really good week of sales and customer reviews, which will go unacknowledged by corporate, but the second business declines for any reason, it will impact your hours. I suppose that's the nature of big business, but ultimately it screws over the least paid workers.
ProsIndividual store manager was optimistic and encouraging.
ConsHigher management makes a lot of unfair assessments of individual store performance.

Great working environment with a great team.
Typical work day start before the store opens restocking merchandise. I learned direct replenishment. Management was very helpful with day-to-day operations. Work place culture was EEO oriented. Hardest part was unloading truck on delivery morning. The most enjoyable part of the job was completion of work within the time schedule.

Over worked, under paid
Want everything done but your not getting paid for it. And a miserable .14 cent raise come on now! I did alot for this place... at the end of the day I felt pressured to quit. So I did. It wasn't worth the stress. I often got in trouble for working so much but they are the ones that kept calling me in on my days off.

Not the place to work if you want the hours you are asking for.
Michaels hires too many people, so therefore, not enough hours. Hours are also based on how many emails you receive from customers at the register. You can be a great, hardworking employee, but the hours that you are scheduled is based on how many emails you get from customers.... don’t get swept under the rug. If you’re a dedicated, hard worker... look elsewhere.
ProsNice environment.
ConsToo many employees.

Not a good place to work
They played favorites and made others feel inadequate. They said they would train you to learn everything, but didn’t then threw you into a project. Then would get short with you when you asked a question

Fun and creative environment, amazing people to work with.
Always something to do, restocking shelves, helping customers, learn a lot about products and projects. Management was amazing, went through a very hard time with Family and had to leave job. Would recommend to anyone interested in the arts and crafts world.

Michael’s should NOT be open during the virus pandemic.
The store’s ceo feels as though this company counts as essential. They claim to provide “cleaning materials” to stores to disinfect them; but in truth, they have their employees buy their own products to “use” during the crucial times of the pandemic. They don’t offer enough sick leave so the people that are actually sick end up losing their jobs. Employees have been risking their health just to go to work for a store that sells ARTS AND CRAFTS, not food or water or medicine nothing essential They immediately chose to let their corporate workers stay home but keep their stores open Michael’s does not care and they never did, even before the pandemic 0/5 They force you to do more than your job requirements because they can’t keep anyone in their stores to do actual job titles Their hours don’t cover the work requirements for things they want done Don’t work here let them go out of business Mark Cosby is terrible They’re scandalous Just work somewhere else Don’t waste your time Have a good day

Amazing Employees
I worked there the longest out of any job I have had. The people who get hired are always wonderful and were the reason I stayed. Typically a day would look like showing up, punching in, asking the manager on duty what you're up to, check the plan for the store that day, and complete your shift. The workplace culture is wonderful with so many different people to meet and learn about. The job itself is pretty easy and fun however there is not much room to advance and it is very hard to move up in the company. Management causes the most issues and has trouble dealing with several situations. The most enjoyable part of the job is definitely the other people, you can make great connections and your shifts go by much faster.
ProsCompany shows appreciation, flexible availability
ConsManagement is not organized, no room to advance
