Productive and fun place to work.
Great place to work and loved all my co workers. Still see some of them occasionally. Good bonuses. Training is great. Lots of classes and reading materials in the beginning. They let you work independently. Great customer service with all the employees. Customer comes first always.

I’ve worked my way up in the company and followed the steps to success. Pay is very low for people with a degree. You have to wait at least 3 year to become a Gm to make decent pay. The work life balance is bad. There’s no set schedule. I wold not recommend for a college graduate. If you don’t have any leadership experience coming out of college I would recommend the MT program.

Many overly standardized problems
Menards is...mostly dependent on your location. I don't think managers have the tools they need to get people to advance, never mind lacking the time to do so. The in-home training is ok, but there needs to be an experiential component and more effective signaling to advance.
You're forced to do alternating weekends, and that only gets worse as you go up the chain. Changes are impossible to implement due to corporate eyes focused entirely on customer flow. This includes training your people. Manager Trainees may not have time to study the material, and the material does not help us become good managers (and really, the program can be roughly summarized as "teaching to tests". This program can be good for some people, but for the vast majority, I would not recommend Menards.
Also, promoting employees from within more often as opposed to using the MT program. There were so many great employees who became disengaged being passed over for new MTs.
Lastly, allow for time outside of the flow of sales for things like training, going through the in-home-training program at work, talking about specific interactions, developing projects, and other ideas that would push sales through the service Menards wants to provide.

Fast pace work environment.
Positive culture and atmosphere. During the busy seasons (March-December) Work is non-stop. Managers are always looking for people to put in extra hours doing overnights when new store layouts need to be set. Turnover is very noticeable but this also means there are ample opportunities to advance if you make yourself stand out as a competent, hard working employee.

A few managers that care, but others don't care
I was hired as a manager trainee and started learning the job as a cashier. Like almost any job, the cashier position has both plus and minus attributes.
I was expecting full time work, so that I could absorb a fair amount of knowledge. I found myself working somewhat less than twenty hours because there was no one to oversee my training, or the customer volume was reduced, and the newest person is often the first person sent home.
I was not learning very much, so they brought in two people that I had never seen before. They spent five to ten minutes each on my evaluation, which turned out to be negative and I was no longer a cashier.
I then went to the customer service desk and began restocking items that had been returned by customers. I actually enjoyed that because I learned a lot about products, locations AND customers.
Things to watch out for? Bonuses are often given out as rebate slips and have usage limitations. I wanted to buy a refrigerator and could not use my employee discount OR my rebate certificate. The rebate expired and the employee discount had very small limits.
My store was Rochester (Minnesota) South. While they have some good managers, they have a few that discriminate and should be supervising. They have a high turnover rate and the scheduler kept reducing my hours, which became detrimental to my job and effectiveness. Besides, unless they like you, the training is very poor.

Great possibilities, poor execution.
Menards policies are in favor of the company instead of the employee. General Managers tend to play favorites with employees and treat Part Time/Full Time workers with no respect. Some people I have seen go from Part Time to Full Time to management in a matter of two months while I begged to be FT for a year before I was promoted. I witnessed multiple new employees that I trained become my superiors.

Great place, some drama
Great place, great people, some drama. Lots of repetitive work. Your opinion is somewhat considered most of the time. Managment could be better, as with anywhere.

They will promise more pay, but when the time comes they deny you
After you are promised experience pay, because you have 25+ years, they in turn will tell you either they never said that or corporate said no. Their department managers should actually be trained in their fields instead of being bounced around from department to department and not knowing the product.
