Hated it
At first it was good to work there as it was my first but I soon began to hate it. The staff there is like every place quick to complain and gossip! The managers were awful they weren’t realistic enough for example they would sometimes have four people on a Saturday late shift which wasn’t possible. Nor were the managers understanding to personal needs even if you had been there for years! The store was quite hectic and pay was very low.
ProsPeak time lots of hours
ConsManagers were bad, pay was low, work load was very high, no real progress in my eyes

Lovely place to work
I worked Part Time for Matalan throughout my teenage years until the time came to get a full-time job. I can proudly say that I am so much more confident, manageable of my time, focused and motivated to work. It is always busy and always something to do so time goes very quick. This job is like a work out so there is no going to the gym!
One thing i would say is that I working part time there is not much flexibility with hours to work, If i wanted time off then I would have to make sure that i say about 1/2 months in advance and there is no swapping of shifts really.
ProsBusy, Always things to do, Fun.
ConsNot allowed much time off

Fun and comforatable place to work
A typical day of work will consist of getting there 10 minutes before the shift, then going into the admin office for our team briefing. We will then go and do our jobs for the day.
I improved my till and people skills a lot.
The management at Matalan are really nice and friendly, they make you feel at home and not uncomfortable.
The co-workers are really nice and friendly, easy to get along with and there if you need a hand with anything. They also help make the time pass quicker.
The hardest part of the job was getting used to all the different things that you can do on tills at Matalan, where as before we had the Supervisors and Managers that did it for us.
The most enjoyable part of the job is when I get to interact with customers and have a chat with them, as I think they helps the time go nicer and makes them feel welcomed and they'll want to come back.

Very demanding but a good example of retail.
Four to eight hours a day, up to ten hours a day during peak seasons i.e. christmas. I learnt to appreciate hard-working and this opportunity has allowed me to see the day-to-day running of a huge retail store, and the type of challenges faced by those in management.
Prosgenerous breaks
Consisolated location

Not terrible as a first job, otherwise do not work here
To give credit where credit is due, matalan did give me some skills and experience when I had none, as well as offering a good discount system at 20% and so there is merit given to that. Despite this however, I would not wish anyone to work here full stop as the Costs far outweigh the benefits. As an employee the company does not value you at all. With the pay being at £4.35 an hour for under 18s and £6.15 an hour for 18-21 year olds, the company does not recognise and appreciate its customer assistants. The work itself is usually fast paced with employees being forced to do everything from working the tills to delivery to putbacks. There is little to no flexibility with shifts and so if you’re a student who’s timetable is subject to change, do not expect them to accommodate you. Your shifts will 1000% go over your contracted hours and so they will overwork you. The managers themselves were often nice and helpful but did have favourites and so did favour some employees over others. Terrible job, better paid jobs elsewhere doing the same work

Good staff to work with, enjoyable job but may get a bit repetitive. Minimum wage pay which I didn’t expect from such a large company. Flexible with hours to a certain extent.

Relaxed, Fun Environment to work in
Although i was only there for a short time, I could tell Matalan were a good company to work for. I received full and thorough training when i started and was also assured i could ask my collegues any questions when I was unsure of things. I learnt all the skills required for my job and i know i will be able to apply them to other retail jobs. Management were really accomodating, as this was my first job, and would ensure i was progressing well in the company.

Good Experience
Matalan is a great place to work, staff and the majority of customers are very friendly. Easy to find something to do - after my current job role is done - such as putting clothes back from changing rooms or hanging returns.
With working for Matalan for 6 years plus I have learned a lot such as being trained in the admin office, being noticed to take on that responsibility is great. however there is not enough notice on rota changes so plans have to sometimes be dropped at the last minute.

Large staff fun place to work
Matalan was a fast turnover store, I enjoyed increasing my sales targets and the positive feedback and the job satisfaction that i received when colleagues and customers commented on the improvements that i obtained while working there, At request of my area manager i was asked to support a larger graded store to improve visual presentation prior to a regional visit.
The part of my job that i wasnt keen on were the night shifts which through time became unsettling to my home life.
