You Are Nothing but a Number
While my coworkers and immediate supervisor were awesome and really trying to address the many problems, and the location was very nice, overall I hated it and left much worse off than I started, due to their poor management of staffing and plan membership. A very high-pressure hiring process, with no respect for the fact that I was still working my previous job while completing their onboarding on my own time. Training done by other workers while simultaneously trying to do their own jobs...so if a situation didn't happen to come up for them, I didn't get training on it. The only written guidelines or policies available were vague, confused, and usually VERY outdated. Changes were communicated with scattered emails, so if it was sent before you hired on or somehow missed you, you had no idea until you messed up. "Magellan Cares" initiative, which the company made a very big deal about as corporate philanthropy, but which was really just asking the employees themselves to donate (and often). Very call center-oriented; rather ridiculous metrics, lots of pressure to meet them early on, rigid breaks and feeling chained to your desk...and while start time and breaks are rigid, your end time is often much later than scheduled. Being yelled at by members because the plans and provider options were so limited, by provoders about billing codes any payment rates, and facility staff because the processes were so inefficient and/or because they didn't get what they wanted. Professional company with an eye to the future; solid management and well positioned in the market
I spent most of my time in the field servicing and assisting and modeling recovery for WellCare Members under a contract with Magellan Health. I worked from my home and had a desk top computer in my home office. I drove long distances and spent time encouraging and mentoring and assisting Members with daily life activities and accompanied on appointments and did Peer Support Mentoring and counseling and empathetic listening and gave appropriate feedback. I maintained internal and external reports and completed notes for each telephonic or in person visit and attempt and maintained and reported expenses and keep in touch with distance supervisor via telephone and emails and faxes. I spent ata least 2 to 3 hours a week in a weekly meeting of a small team consisting of the other Peer Specialist and the company liaison and with my supervisor and other interested parties telephonically. I dealt with possible crisis and unusual events and contacted agencies on behalf of the members. To me the hardest part of the job was the constant travel and not finding Members at home when a meeting was scheduled and getting phone calls from Members after hours in near and actual crisis. The frustration of not being able to actually assist Members with food and housing and transportation for the most part made the job very difficult. I enjoyed talking to the Members about their lives and opportunities and modeling recovery and assisting them with exercises to help them cope better with their ill

Pharmacy Technician | Tallahassee, FL | Feb 18, 2015
Job goes downhill very fast
The company, Magellan, overall is a great company and it is also great at compensating employees. It offers health benefits, paid time off. There are some State holidays that this company does not recognize and you will be mandated to report to work. On the downside, this particular location does not complement the company as a whole. The work environment is biased and based off of favoritism as opposed to work ethic. Hard work and honesty come second to friendships and deceptive work behavior and it becomes apparent that one can get ahead by shamming and creating office relationships as opposed to honestly getting the job done. So if you are a hard worker who values integrity you will soon find this environment hard to deal with. It is a call center so it is expected that you will be consumed with calls your entire workday, which is perfectly fine, but when the work is unevenly distributed between the call center reps, you will find yourself completely drained by the end of your shift and definitely by the end of the week. The management is often times difficult to deal with. Asking a job related question (trust me, you will have many of these) is often met by attitude and sometimes rude behavior. You may not get a valid answer from them and you will leave feeling like an annoying child as opposed to a Pharmacy Technician who is PTCB certified. There seems to always be a "gray" area between most answers that they provide, leaving you confused and left to decipher it

ConsUnevenly distributed workload, rude management, favoritism, no advancement opportunities

They caused clinicians to go from contract to salaried for same job performed
Before Magellan got into the govdrnment contracts business at differing military bases, clinicians were able to travel, providing living accomodations to avoid moving permanent residence. We used to make $50 an hour for 7 days a week, on call and full time. When Magellan came in, the pay dropped in half. They ruined the culture of veteran clinicians who provided services. Former MHN employees hired each other to work at Magellan. Nepotism at its finest. Magellan crummy in comparison to former companies who had contracts. Made it so that if you worked for that pay, you were selling out or settling. Management not honest, caused clinicians to be paranoid of each other. Promoted separatism within the team at the sites. Some of us required to live in the State or local area. Played favorites. Others from other states were afforded contract pay and hotel accomodations. And, it was no secret. Management supervisors using snitches looking for negatives to support a supervisor we NEVER met who only live 2 states away.. Can't fulfil their children's services part of the contract because of nature of assignment - no office, bad reputation with employees who were honest about job environment with other clinicians considering job. Insulting pay, insulting supervisors, negative company culture. I have worked in this capacity at four different bases. I know Magellan and can compare to other gov. contractors.
ProsJob with benefits. Good for those with over age 68 who could earn as much as.
ConsHalf as much pay as former gov. contractor providing identical services, No office whatsoever when work with children - just "walk-around" services

Magellan Inc does not value dedicated professional employees.
Worked as a Military and Family Life Counselor (MFLC ) for this company for 4 years. At the time of their renegotiating and setting up for the new OSD contract they initially state my position was safe and I would be furlough and then fire me. Everyone (management and support staff) stopped answering their phones and ignored emails. Management's nonchalant lackluster approach to the OSD contract change is appalling and disgusting. This company does not value professional in the field, has little to no insight into what MFLC's do or work looks like and they do not care how much you may have given (i.e.going above and beyond to make sure military families have access to what they need, being frequently asked to provide training for incoming staff (although not your role and never compensated for it), not paying for holidays and NOT allowing you to take your PTO time accrued which therefore does not allow for you to actively work (have to only do them on weekends) on obtaining live CE's to maintain the license you need for employment. There have been many additional cases of those who have never been compensated for travel time or educational and expense reimbursements. They also have a habit of recruiting people for positions and not providing all the information up front and then essentially "throwing" those new employees head first without any previous guidance and expect the MFLC's on the ground to train and behave as a supervisor. I No LONGER recommend this posi

great opportunity to learn victim advocacy
great positions and interesting and fulfilling work, Other professionals with same job duties get paid more outside of this company. Since the management is remote, they do not see how hard its employees work. They do not see the dedication and professionalism. It matters to the Army and everyone who works on base. The staff of victim advocates are all professionals and they care so very much about help ing people. Most are our qualified and able to help others in ways that benefit Magellan and the contract they serve, . Magellan makes tons of money off of its employees. They are lucky to have employees of high caliber. Magellan does not have vacation that is built up. They do not offer an incentive to answer the 24 hour hotline. Staff are dedicated to serve the hotline and stop their lives on a minutes notice with an emergency call. This is true dedication,. They should compensate employees with something that matches this dedication. Without vacation time (not covered under fair labor standards) and forced time off when we work overtime, it is a wonder employees still work these hours. It is like they take advantage of qualified army spouses who have knowledge, skills and experience. Spouses are part of the army too. They are ready to support their family when they are deployed. We need vacation and sit time just like all employees do because we are spouses of they army. They say they support the army but do they when they hire spouses that get literally
ProsVictim advocacy is important work.
Conspay, vacation and benefits are not commensurate with experience.

Good salary and clients, unstable future
If you're ready to have a leisure job without a lot of clients, you already have a support system in the area and don't need friends... you're retired- this may be the job for you. If you aren't in one of those categories I'd really caution the job. The selling point is the low workload and the salary but the salary is truly the only benefit you get. They fail to mention during the interview many on base hate the program and that future potential employers who know the program may automatically view you as lazy and/or unethical. You're on call from 7am-7pm or 8am-8pm and honestly it's whatever the base determines they need. I've had days where I've been surprised to learn I need to come in at 10-11pm at night, days where I need to work starting at 7am and then leave for a few hours and come back... it makes it really hard to have a personal life. Then you add in the fact that you sign something stating you won't have dual relationships with anyone affiliated with the base- so no service member friends, no spouses, no colleagues... it makes it really lonely and isolating. If you work with other MFLC then you may gain a friend of two but a lot of them jump from place to place and really aren't interested in getting to know you. They're solely there for the money. If you're looking to progress your career, looking for benefits or to move to call a place home... continue looking. Heck, by the time you get hired the contracts may not even exist anymore!
ProsSalary, sometimes a flexible schedule, workload is laughable at times
Consno PTO/sick time, isolation, unknown how long contract will truly last

Questions And Answers about Magellan Health Services

If you were in charge, what would you do to make Magellan Health Services a better place to work?
Asked Jan 9, 2018
Take a hard look at Northeast MFLC supervisors - they lack organizational and leadership skills. I do not appreciate a supervisor who spends time on dad jokes and brag tags and employee celebrations but does not bother to provide accurate basic information I need to do my job. When most supervision is reactive rather than proactive it does not help anyone. Also, integrity in managers and contractors would be a big plus. I wonder if these people are that incompetent or purposely telling half truths and making things up as they go along.

Pay at least the same or higher than the federal employees who are doing the same work at the same location. You are health insurance company provide health insurance coverage to the employees that actually covers them and does not require them to pay thousands more in health care costs throughout the year. Offer a reasonable amount of time off per year and make it accessible. Don't take away paid time off for base closures and staff being unable to work due to no fault of their own. Quit focusing on just meeting the numbers and focus on providing the service. The message at the Bi weekly staff meetings is make the numbers at all costs, delivery of more bad news, supervisor inability to answer any questions of substance and reminders that we are not supposed to be using anything but DOD materials in sessions but the materials are very dated and limited so we are putting a position of either ignoring this statement or not providing any Services of substance. The contract Awards pay millions of dollars per therapist which is mostly filtered up to an extremely bloated support system. Counselors learn pretty quickly that the expectation at this company is to provide the numbers by any means, don't speak up or cause a problem

How long does it take to get hired from start to finish at Magellan Health Services? What are the steps along the way?
Asked Jul 6, 2016
About a month. There are three separate interviews. Once a position is accepted you go through background checks fingerprinting and drug test. That process was somewhat cumbersome and repetitive. Especially the fingerprinting portion which had to be done digitally and then in person with ink and paper at a local sheriff's department.
Answered Jul 28, 2020
I applied online and within a few weeks, was contacted directly by the hiring manager. We set up a virtual video interview for the following week. I was offered the position 2 days after the interview. HR contacted me immediately to start the background check, etc. From job acceptance to start date, it was about a month.
Answered Mar 9, 2020
How did you get your first interview at Magellan Health Services?
Asked Jul 21, 2016
I believe I applied on indeed and received a call back fairly quickly. The initial call is a screening to ensure that you meet the requirements for the position then there is a clinical interview where you address how you would handle specific issues and finally there is an interview with the local supervisor you will be working for directly. This is the person who makes an offer of employment. I tend to base my decision about whether I will take a job on whether I will work for that specific supervisor. Mine changed about 3 weeks after I started so keep in mind that there is frequent movement of Supervisors.
Answered Jul 28, 2020

What benefits does Magellan Health Services offer?
Asked Feb 5, 2018
Hard to have a work/life balance with only 7 PTO days a year and no sick time either which I find interesting for a, "health care company."
Answered Oct 25, 2020
Also EAP which is difficult to access and high-deductible health insurance which requires you to pay for coverage for yourself and a significant amount for dependents and then spend about $2,000 per person before anything is covered. The health insurance coverage is significantly lacking. And my mind if I have to spend $2,000 before anything is covered then I don't really have coverage. I suppose if you have a lot of health issues and spend a lot of money on doctor visits and medications it would be worthwhile.

How are the working hours at Magellan Health Services?
Asked Jun 30, 2016
Working hours at Magellan depend on the type of work and role you are in. Speak with your recruiter about specific working hours.
Answered Oct 18, 2019
As MFLC hours are good they let you flex time allot and most assignments you set your own hours.
