i'm no doubt sure than the company as a whole operates more efficiently and effectively than my specific practice did, though i'm sure there are some themes in particular places

From the first day to my last day, I suffered while working at the downtown Los Angeles location. I remember that on my first day, the first thing my boss told me while walking up to meet her was "oh Jesus Christ" for no reason at all. Well, that was a warm welcome. I was always made to feel that I was unwelcomed at the company and I am not sure why. No matter how much I put in terms of effort, I was always told some nonsense of how I could better do things. I would get stared at randomly with no effort to conceal it. I felt that some individuals were doing their best to get me fired. So much was the discomfort that I eventually had to talk with the Human Resources which led me to leaving the position.
The training was abysmal. Training was a by-product of people's schedule. If there was time on their schedule for training, then there will be training. There was no training for itself. While in training, nothing was formal or organized. You just had to shadow fellow employees which was not the best way to go about this because of the nature of the position. Absolutely no manuals were given as a reference. You had to rely on asking questions to your peers.
The company atmosphere was infected with the attitude of "I got hired here so I am awesome". Too many people had an inflated sense of themselves. Efforts were made to "prove" how they are better than you. If you made any attempt to seem intelligent about anyt
This KPMG office in Silicon Valley has a first year associate turn over rate of over 50% within the first year. That means 50% of the first-year employees quit before their year is up. Recruitment for this company is a scam. They lure you in with the promise of internal growth and job stability. However, all you receive as a first year is torturous hours, minimal compensation (when you finally do the math), and little to no guidance or support. The recruiters deserve Oscars. They are great at their job. They paint a picture of elitism and success. They convince college students into believing they will be entering the business and accounting world on top. They tell you that you will be working a couple hours later than usual during a busy season that lasts 1-2 months. The reality is that these students are crushed into accepting a sub-par lifestyle that devalues them as human beings. Any free-spirit they have going into this job is obliterated. In order to continue working here, one must accept an ideology in which their time means nothing. I have and will continue to warn individuals exploring employment at this office. I will tell them the truth. The "busy season" that lasts "1-2 months" is a lie. You can get assigned to a second, maybe even a third. The "extra couple hours" is also a lie. Been with KPMG going on 5 years. Opportunities for growth are limited for people with primarily a technical skillset. Tax knowledge is vital to advancement in the Tax Technology practice (which makes sense), unless you are in procurement or some administrative group. You WILL be kept busy, which is good.
KPMG "celebrates diversity", and constantly nags employees to contribute to community. But they do not really give a "we care about you as an individual" vibe (in my experience). Some walk the walk issues here. For example recently management encouraged people to use their Sunday to go to an MLK public gathering... but didn't (and never has) given employees MLK day off. They claim to honor veterans but don't give that day off either. In fact there are only about 6 holidays (8 days) off a year unless Partners are feeling particularly generous, they they give a couple extra at year end. During the summers they give what they call Jumpstart Friday (can leave work at 3PM) but client work still comes first, and Manager and above better not be unreachable nights and weekends or you take flack for it.
KPMG pays no overtime, doesn't compensate for extra time put in either, so there is very little incentive to give them any extra. They have a bonus program where people can nominate co-workers for awards... but cap at $1,000 per recipient per year, silly. High achievers should not be limited, they should be encouraged to do more and more. But they do have good work remote and fl

To be fair there are many benefits to working for a Big Four accounting firm. You will learn a ton of new information and you will grow as an employee. Employees get to work with many talented people. Not to mention a job at a Big Four looks great on your resume.
On the downside, if you look at the Best Places to work lists - you will find KPMG either listed below every other Big Four firm or completely absent from the list. Top management can make all the excuses they want but it comes down to two primary issues.
Management loves to take credit for success but blames underlings for failures. Either way you aren't going to share in the money pouring into the firm.
Second, management likes to play favorites and no one seems to be willing to reel these managers in. Companies need to be able to show why one employee was promoted over another and in many cases a halfway good lawyer could prove that this was not the case.
Over the years I watched countless talented employees jump ship to the other Big Four Accounting firms. As a result, many people who do remain and work up to Partner or Principal aren't the best and brightest.
If you find yourself working for this firm and want anything other than a very, very slow climb to the top - take as many classes as you can and constantly look for a position at one of the other Big Four Accounting firms. Many people I know jumped ship with their manager to a new firm and even entire departments have left together.

Since I was there for so many years, I was allowed to work outside the box at times when my regular work was done. For, example I lead a swat team of technical experts to solve an 'unsolvable' problem with a firm-wide hoteling system that the firm was beta testing. They just couldn't get it to work properly. I did my research and resolved all the problems in one major meeting. i also saved the provider from going out of business. If KPMG had not accepted his system, they would have been finished.
In another problem, telecom was out in San Juan office during their critical tax season, and our major provider said it would take 90 days to restore. I was asked the 'impossible' to get service from another provider in one week. When I arranged it for a week later, they asked for it in 3 days. I delivered.
The week of the KPMG Albany office relocation, when all was set to go we were advised by AT&T that due to a NY state of emergency they would not be able to deliver the data service we required. I talked to a President I knew at AT&T, from my work at ABC and he obtained the service on-time for the office relocation in-spite of the state of emergency. I was able to advise that the circuits/hardware were immediately available via my research. They simply had to plug in and program.
This was in addition to my regular work in telecommunications billing, and telecommunications voice project management.

Lots of new things to learn out of College, but easy to get misplaced in the shuffle
Throughout various client projects I was able to learn many different skills both technical and softer inter-personal business skills. Initially my experience was fast-paced; I was immediately scheduled on a project and, attending meetings with various clients within weeks, and producing substantial deliverables on my own.
On-the-whole the typical work week was traveling to the client-site on Mondays and leave on Thursdays, staying at local hotels durring the week. Hours tend to be around 50+ hour weeks. On Fridays, you are implicitly expected to go into your local office to take care of some administrative work and network.
I had been moving from project to project every 6 or 8 months. However, I've found myself on a very long term engagement and have started to feel stagnant in my role. I've struggled to transition away from this project.
As my first job out of college, I expected some substantial guidance and training. I felt a rather consistent lack of support in this regard. I often felt like the development path picked for me was not fully considered.
In spite of some of the frustrations depicted here,I have no regrets about joining the firm. My co-workers have been typically great to work with and approachable. If you are prepared to travel and firmly drive your own career path (and experienced doing so), there can be great opportunity for you here. Be prepared to deal with some internal inefficiencies and bureaucracy.

I started as an IT Helpdesk officer and I can tell you that I worked on more than enough laptops/servers than most of my other colleagues ion other organization. In the beginning, we had about 700 users, close to 1000 computers and 20 servers. Currently, the users have grown to 1500, about 2000 computers and 50 servers (VM inclusive).
We are a global firm and our IT infrastructure is line with Global trends and policies. После успешного прохождения теста был следующий этап - решение кейса ( в моем случае попросили сделать презентацию, в которой нужно было провести анализ компании). После выполнения задания, через два дня со мной снова связалась HR и попросила записать видео-интервью (вопросы больше мотивационного типа, а также на знание индустрии, в которой мне предстояло работать).
Итак, все перечисленные этапы пройдены, после чего HR приглашает на собеседование к ним в офис. Приезжаю за 10 мин и ожидаю менеджера. Он опоздал на 20 минут, попросил рассказать о себе, опыте работы и задал пару вопросов относительно презентации, не спросив ничего насчет знания английского(в вакансии они строго требовали уровень Advanced). 1.) Job Work/Life Balance : good news is there is no more busy-season, bad news is that that is due to being busy all year. You'll still be slammed Jan - April, but expect your May - September to be busy and your Nov - Dec to clash with holiday plans. Expect to work 1 - 2 weekends during non- busy season months. Additionally, due to the negative press; expect to spend 10-20 hours a month on mandatory audit quality training.
2.) Salary/Benefits : KPMG admits that they trail the other big four firms. They are attempting to remedy the situation. However, with the announcement to drop consulting work for audit clients, I believe they'll use that as an excuse to flat-line salaries. Lobby hard to get a better starting salary. They need you more than you need them.
3.) Job Security : good news is you'll be relatively safe, bad news is that is because they can't afford to lose anymore staff. Same goes for advancement, great opportunity from all the turnover. However, staff have continually refused promotions to ensure their resignation period stays at a shorter period and/or to avoid the pain they see seniors in.
4.) Management (Directors and above): I have no idea what they are doing besides overselling their practices. To be fair, that's not a bad thing if they implemented an effective staffing plan, but they haven't. They are very disconnected from their staff and will stroll by the staff rows on their way out at 5pm. That said; it's a mixed bag on knowledge and helpfulness

A snake pit were backstabbing and overt lying was the norm to hold people down instead of building them up. Management should go through ethical training. Not respected internally nor in the marketplace with clients. I know, I was also former client who helped terminate KPMG’s contract. Highly suspect motives and actions as has been verified through the NYC courts with arrests and convictions!

Philadelphia office has such a negative work environment! It is pure misery going into the office every day! HR is extremely unprofessional and finance and accounting needs a complete overhaul!

Absolutely horrendous work life balance. There was no balance. It was literally all work and no life. No time for spouse. No time for kids. No time for personal health. Definitely no time for hobbies.
Also, a very demoralizing and depressing culture and working atmosphere. People are not afraid of throwing you under the bus. Managers will happily do it to their in-charges time after time.
Pay was not even close to being acceptable for the hours and stress of the job.
In the end, I wasn’t giving any time to my family. Whenever I had a few moments to talk with my wife it would be about work because it got to the point where I couldn’t think of anything except work. It consumed me. I didn’t spend hardly any time at all with my first daughter for the first year of her life. Let alone me not having any time to support my wife during her pregnancy.
My wife told me I didn’t even seem like a person anymore. Finally my wife said, “You will find a new job.” There was no “or else” or ultimatum. Just something that I will do. Period. I looked at what KPMG had made me become in just 2 years and was surprised. I was a complete workaholic. Before KPMG I had vowed never to become a workaholic and to always put my family first. Within two years I was completely consumed by work and didn’t have a relationship with either my wife or my daughter.
So I got a new job that has good work life balance. My family and I are so much happier now.
Do not go into KPMG thinking you can be there for your family or that you won’t become a workaholic. You most definitely will become a workaholic and will not have time for your family.

Too much politics from top to bottom level. Mangers working from years are still managing people like 1980, but this is not the case with the whole company. It varies from team to team. Most of the times ppl are insecure about the job.
