Overall Reviews at Kay Jewelers

Great place to get sales experience as a college student
Overall Kay Jewelers is a good place to gain work experience and then
move on to bigger and better companies that compensate a great
living wage with excellent benefits. Work and family balance is a possibility but not at it's finest. You consistently have to be on your feet 8hr and it's very fast pace. You can have your sales and commission compromised if your not fast and or unknowledgeable in the sales or ringing transactions on the computer department and you need to keep a good record of who you are helping. Noting is ever guaranteed. Not the sale, the returned customers, or commission. Always keep notes and learn to your own advancement. Must be very aggressive sales person to make it in this industry.

Fun and exciting some days. Stressful others.
I worked for Kay/Sterling jewelers for 20 years. I was an office manager
which transitioned into field inventory control specialist as office tasks
were augmented by computers and centralized over the years. The benefits and pay were good for retail but not so good in comparison to other industries. I was good at my job and enjoyed it and would still be working for Kay if not for the COVID layoffs.
ProsBeing part of the important moments in our customers lives. Varied duties kept job interesting.
ConsEmployees were responsible for their own work/life balance

Kay Jewelers was a great place to work
Kay Jewelers was a good place to work. I took the certification classes for diamond and gemstones. The most difficult part of the job was working different shifts. One day you open, the next you close, then you open again. It would be better if you could always work the same shift.

Stay Far Away
If you like working a minimum of 48 hours per week, with no overtime pay as a salaried manager then this is the place to be. If you want to work 65-80 per week with the same pay during the holidays then you should work here.
ProsCustomers are there to buy

Not recommended
Job status will change without proper notice.
Your hours will be reduced and given to new hires, for new hire training purposes.
Not fair being that we all need to maintain life's responsibilities
ProsCo workers and customers were friendly

It started off okay
I started as a seasonal with very minimal pay. It took 2 yrs to get promoted to full time (after working those 2 years with 40+ Hours a week and at one point having only 3 employees in a store that needs 2 people at all times for a few months)with $2 cut from new hires. Hr took months to contact me after I tried reaching about a few incidents with a fellow coworker and I quit bc there was no manager for a whole year and the district manager did not even try to hear any plea against that coworker because they were helping stores sales district manager was more worried about reaching their quota rather than the unity of the store and the team after 2.5 years of being taken advantage of I finally left and that was the best decision I ever made for myself

Good company. Bad pay.
Multi billion dollar company provides excellent customer service and product. Also provides low hourly wage. Workers handle thousands of dollars in cash and tens of thousands in merchandise. Workers are required to keep up with sales standards and training but the compensation is low and right above minimum wage.
ProsDiscount on jewelry
ConsShort breaks. Low pay.

Awful work environment
Terrible place to work, Manager was overbearing and showed distinct favoritism. Manager and employees were cutthroat commission thieves with respect to sales.

With the right leader you will succeed!
I worked for Kay Jewelers for almost 6 years. When I started I was a seasonal ringer and was kept on as a permanent member. I was working full time hours with a part time title. I had to fight to be moved up and it took forever. I was an Inventory Control Specialist. Then our store lost the best manager ever and it went down hill after that...very cut throat, new management would go and change your hours so you didn't get overtime so it wouldn't take away from their bonus and so on...Then I moved locations and it became even worse!! They promote people who didn't know anything and the management relys on the seasoned workers to teach them how to be the boss!?!!? Does that seem fair!?! I loved working for Kay, but they need to recognize everyone as a team and not just reward the managers. My one biggest con is the fact you have to fight for hours and the manager can decide what to give and if you dont work for a certain length of time they terminate you!!! After pouring your heart into your work just to be thrown away because of an inexperienced management is horrible!!! Only thing I wouldn't change was the knowledge I gained and some of the great people i met along the way!

Loved working here! Everyday was was a new and educational experience
Great experience with both co-workers and job itself. Management was not making customer service FIRST priority. Learned a lot fro working with people as well as fine jewelry.
