Working here isn’t bad.. if you aren’t a manager or a supervisor you’ll only be working four hour shifts so this is a great second job. The Escondido location is very good with flexibility and they always work with your schedule.

Fun people, bad management
Coworkers were fantastic and fun people to work with! But it wasn't uncommon to find one of the managers sleeping in the back office (no joke). Great employee discount on crafting supplies and a great place to learn tons of tricks and tools of the trade.
It was fun working with customers on fulfilling their craft and art projects or custom framing art pieces, seeing and setting new merchandise was fun.

Very enjoyable part time position
Very flexible schedule; worked 20 hrs/week by choice in 2007-2009. Was offered Mgmt opportunity within weeks (I had 20 yrs of previous retail Mgmt experience). Company offered good benefits for F/T employees. Pay was low for P/T employees. Teamwork, discounts, training in multiple areas was promoted. I very much enjoyed the atmosphere & worked in a brand new store with approachable Managers & friendly employees. Would definitely work for JoAnn again.
Helping people with their projects is satisfying. A friendship is developed with repeat shoppers which creates a pleasant experience for everyone. Getting the store ready for the next day id a pretty good workout.

Lovely Place to Work
Working at a Jo-Ann's is a walk in the park. If you enjoy interacting with older ladies and college students that are enthusiastic about their crafting then this is the place for you! It is a retail job so there is stocking as well as helping guests find the purchases they need. Very chill atmosphere except during sales.
The workload is very lite and it is a fun place to work. The other employees are very diverse and it is just a really awesome place to work. You get discounts on everything (even things that are on sale) so if you are a crafter you will spend your paycheck here and probably not regret it.
Definitely do it its a fun job.

Poor management
Used to love to work for Joann's till major turn over in management. They pushed my former boss out due to the lack of respect towards her. During the busy season, I was active store manager which entailed I'd get more money for the position. Suppose to get a separate check once the new store manager started. Never happened.
Soon as the new store manager started, she had guns blazing. She got verbally abusive against a lot of us; either for yelling at employees for dress code in front of coworkers and/or customers (their standard is "go green"), making fun them for something they said, due to some of our availability we weren't qualified for the position/transfer, then giving us attitude when we came in to shop on our days off… It made a hostile work environment due to the fact that woman has said multiple of times she is on medication due to her mental health. With this day and age, you have to think about if they are verbally abusive, they might get physical. Me being basically the assistant who got thrown into the position before my former boss left, I didn't know how to go about with reporting the new store manager.
I would like to mention she has left the building for really long breaks (ie. 40 minutes to 2 hour breaks) while the rest of us have to work without a break (that been working for 8 hours straight).
Needless to say, I'd watch your back working at this particular location. The woman is off her rocker since she has multiple of times said she has to take me
I work for Joanns in Illinois, when my husband got transferred to Alaska, the company gave me a transfer and I was the happiest when I work for them. Great human resources, best company to advance your career, they really care.
I'm still sad I have moved again and no longer work for Joanns, too far now.
Joann Fabrics is a fast paced multi tasking retail compay.
A typical day would be performing multiple tasks to ensure stock is put out, providing customer service in the various areas of the store to include preparing and checking the cashier register tills, preparing the daily deposit, scheduling and creating classes, along with providing backup to the fabric counter, the registers and the framing counter. I continued to build on my customer skills by providing assistance to customers with their needs. I continued to build on my skills with working with multiple managers and their managing styles. The team members and management all had a can-do, go-the-extra mile and win-win attitude to make our store the customers happy place. Starting at Joann Fabrics gave me the flexibility that I needed while my children were young. I loved stepping into the Creative Studio Coordinator position and taking charge of the education department for our customers.
ProsTeam member discounts, work flexibility.
ConsNo benefits for part time employment, working 25-37 hours a week being part time.
I enjoy working at joanns because of the customers assisting them in locating items for their hobbies and creating new ideas for making dolls or clothing for themselves or children. also making the customer feel at home and comfortable talking to me about what project they are working on and to assist them in finding the right tools and appliques to complete their project and have them leaving with a smile on their face and ease of them completing their project ontime.
Prosgetting to meet new people and listening to their ideas of new projects
Consworking with great people and making everyone smile
Questions And Answers about Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores
What would you suggest Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores management do to prevent others from leaving?

Pay a living wage!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Stop Cutting HOURS, and GIVE US MORE STAFF
Answered Oct 13, 2021
Raise the hourly wage. Corporate promised employees that worked through COVID that the Premium Pay would be made into a permanent raise. However, a month into the new year the premium pay disappeared and there was no raise in sight. We found out a few months later that the managers got to keep their raises. It was only the Team Members that didn't receive the raise that had been promised.

Have enough people on a shift instead of 3-4 people and give everyone fair hours. Also, raise the pay.

Why did you leave your job at Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores?
Asked Mar 16, 2017
Got tired of not having a constant schedule. I got tired of everything. I was a star employee, put up with this for several years, and put in my two weeks and was met with hatred. I'm glad to be out of such a toxic work environment
Answered Nov 24, 2021
I got tired of my store manager presenting a perfect picture store the my store's district manager. Because of that we were never given enough hours to hire more people to cover shifts when people called out, especially after the mass quitage that happened during 2020. Everyone was expected to come to their shift even if they were sick or physically exhausted from the non-stop shift coverage. It got to the point where there were only 3 people per shift working monday through thrusday even on big doorbuster or coupon days. It was only on visit days that there were enough people for everything to get done.

How much is hourly wage starting as a Seasonal Cashier and little experience?
Asked Sep 19, 2016
Federal minimum wage. if you are lucky to get a 10 cent or a 20 cent raise each year on your hire date. you will work hard for that.
Answered Aug 13, 2020
I started at federal minimum wage for my state at $7.75 an hour. It's taken me years to even get to $8.15 an hour, despite how much I do at that store.

What advice would you give the CEO of Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores about how to improve it?
Asked Feb 7, 2018
Pick up a shift. If you're not working a store floor once a month you don't deserve to be upper management.
Answered Oct 26, 2021
RAISE THE PAY!!! It's ridiculous to give people under 20 hours a week at 8 an hour. Why don't you try living off of that?
