e. Properly connects and disconnects portable oxygen and sets regulators.
f. Performs tasks as required to prepare the patient for transport such as moving IV bags, placing Foley catheters, IMED pumps, Drug Infusion pumps, etc.

General Hospital orientation is welcoming in comparison to other facilities in San Antonio, but once you are working in your designated department watch your back. The Methodist Healthcare System may preach the pillars of excellence and standards, but that is quite frankly a joke in my experience. Just like their mission is to "Serve Humanity to Honor God" lol. I am proud and blessed to be a Christian, but I have never been tormented or treated so poorly in my entire career. I was disillusioned by thinking this was a company based upon christian values. As an organization they may have a vision of greatness, however it is focused on promoting themselves and not their employees. Management never smiles and is consistently negative in their behavior visible for all to witness. Too bad they really don't follow their so-called mission to work as a team in a culture dedicated to improving their deliver of healthcare. Customers are not always treated the same, especially the ones with insurance. I found it very offensive that chairity patients are given free medicine, transporation, and equipment, while paying customers weren't offered similar assistance. For some reason they seem to go above and beyond for some, but others are left to their own vices. I personally observed physician's ordering and perforiming costly testing and procedures that could and should have been performed in an outpatient setting. Working as a Food Service Assistant at Methodist really sucked.
In all honesty, I did not spend a lot of time at Methodist, but the time that I did spend there was horrible. If you are a person that has anxiety you may want to think twice about working here. They are not very understanding of people who have anxiety. I don't know about other mental illnesses. The only thing was the pay and the benefits. So from what I noticed about the culture at Methodist is that there is a hierarchy system. The doctors are treated like gold while the food service workers are treated like grass. Food service managers do not do their job well. They also do not train you well. They didn't know how to control the level of bullying and mistreatment of new employees, so at the end of the day, you end of feeling like nothing. There was a lot of negative energy in that kitchen. Also, the employees that have been there longer will talk about you in all kinds of ways and even in front of your face because they know that the managers are not going to fire them. You also have to do a lot of sucking up or otherwise you would become the black sheep. Also, managers showed a lot of favoritism. Nobody in that is kitchen really your friend. Some people are nice though. Just do not tell anybody your business. If you too quiet than people still treat you like nothing. So you can't win or lose working as a food service worker at Methodist. This is coming from working on a medical-surgical floor. It is hard to want to stay working in this field. There are some days where you are so busy that you cannot take a proper lunch and you are staying overtime to chart (this is day shift), there are few days where it is more balanced and you are leaving on time. The call light system is noisy and is connected to your work phone, so any "high priority alarms" will go to all of the staff's phones if it is not answered immediately. You cannot possibly be in 2 places at once, neither can your PCA. Sometimes it is difficult to coordinate care when the different specialties of doctors involved in your patient's case do not speak to one another, and the attending doctor asks you, the RN, to call them. RNs are always the middle-man to connect all the pieces. Some patients are so complex that they have urology, cardiology, gynecology, neurology, oncology, and palliative care ALL on board at once. I am not exaggerating. And imagine having to coordinate care across all of those specialties while you are caring for 5, at times 6 patients. Also, orders sometimes get missed (because the previous unit/shift was also busy) and you are responsible for getting those done, STAT... so your phone never stops ringing. Communication between the doctors really needs work. Burn-out happens easily due to the patient loads and staffing ratios. Teamwork can be difficult on larger units. I am actually finding it difficult to leave because the working environment and the culture makes it feel like a second home to me. I have been in Houston Methodist for 16 years plus. They take care of their staff and everyone is treated with respect. arrival 1:30pm for 2:00pm shift for shift review. check daily surgical log and situational issues during those surgeries in order to prepare for cases not going well. Admixture of specialized drugs for cardiac procedures. Preperation of medications for scheduled surgeries for the next day. Batch prep of syringes of medications used daily. Stock fluids for next day. As a case would go "south", be required to post in the OR suite, for the ability to run to and from the pharmacy as quickly as possible. This was an intense situation on a dailey basis, and I learned so much concerning cardiac surgery, the preparation for, the clean-up and preparing the patient to be moved to Cardian Intensive Care Unit. Very supportive management, Cardinal Health took over in mid-employment changing most of the procedural balances creating many issues. Co-worker from mornings had been in the facility for two years and was a great help to me as I was new to the OR procedures. A part of the job that was tough to deal with was when a patient would not survive the surgery, or not able to be revieved post-op. As this was new to me, I was like a child at christmas, eyes wide, taking in everything that was spoken, following procedures, watching and observing all that happened.

Same problem they had been dealing with in OPC 18 for years. You go to work, but you don't know when you can come home because you have to stay with the patient till there is a room available in the floors or ICU. Once there is, then you transfer the patient if you are lucky enough to be able to give report to the floor RNs. Once you have given report , you travel with the patient crossing 3 buildings to get to your destination and had to go back to OPC18 carrying a very heavy portable monitor back. No one cares if you haven't eaten for 12 hours or more or you are about to crawl. The you are required to go back to work the next day no matter how late you went home the night before. If you are on-call for the night, you can stay up to 16 hours or more working in another building where they do their on-call cases. Upper management has no visible solution to it despite of their ranks and big salaries. I always put up with a lot of things from my previous employers and stayed long but Houston Methodist truly sucked me out dry, so I had to leave before I get totally burned out. I think the only good thing that came out of working from there is that I lost a lot of weight....from starvation and overwork. It was my shortest employment ever.
