Great place to work
I worked at GNC for 3 years. It was a great place to expand my knowledge and skills towards product knowledge, customer experience and service, and product sales.

Pressured KPI Hitting Work Environment
Fun place to work as a part time employee as it was commission based with some products, but you come to realize how screwed product recommendation is as your pushed to sell specific amounts of certain products and memberships each week even if your customers do not benefit from these. Not much room for creativity as an employee or manager.

Slow advancement, Tedious, and Minimum Wage
My typical day consisted of cleaning, learning about products, interacting with customers to come up with a product plan based on their personal goals and current life style, as well as, constantly being pressured to push products on customers until given the "No response" 3 times. The management was stingy. They expect their employees to run the store by themselves, complete tedious tasks of rearranging displays and shelves, sanitizing the store, memorize extensive product information, while assisting customers and exceeding sales quotas. To a budget conscious customer, the pressure of selling specific items deterred me recommending products that they really need to help them accomplish their goals. All employees start off minimum wage, and if they consistently meet sales quotas of specific products, will receive a pay raise of 25 cents every 6 months. GNC needs to focus less on selling their own products, and be more concerned about the well being and customer's success. The most enjoyable part of this job is getting to see customers who are dedicated to making a healthy life-style change and drastically change in weight, health, and confidence.
ProsCustomer relationships, Product Commission
ConsMinimum Wage, and Pressure to sell products the customer may not need

A great employer that has provided me with invaluable experience
After over seven years of being an operating partner I have learned what it takes to cultivate, build and maintain a successful business. Working one on one with the Franchisee/Owner Operator I have been taught how to protect margin dollars and maintain healthy and adequate inventory levels. The most rewarding part of the job has been developing relationships with customers. The best part of all was seeing how that hard work and development of those relationships generated increased sales, higher margins and increased profitability.
Prosbuilding relationships with customers

Customer Service Driven
There is a lot of autonomy with working at GNC. There is a lot of time spent alone. Most of the work consists of helping customers and learning product information.

Ever changing learning environment
I learned other aspects of HR such as employee benefits and payroll
Management kept employees in the loop of changes within the dept.
Culture of the company was work first then if time permitted, employee perks.
Hardest part of the job was to balance the changes within the department to learn other aspects of HR with little time
Most enjoyable part was the fast pace environment of the role.

productive and fun working envirnment, clear direction from upper management. solid compensation
excellent company to work for, tons of career development opportunities. upper management is caring and want to see you succeed. compensation limited to your own ability to learn the products and how they work together and utilization of company sales practices. Tons of opportunity for career development.
Proslots of free samples, opportunities to get out of the store to market your company and store, great leadership, solid comp plan
Constight clerical budget to run the stores

Fun and easy because I was educated enough for the job.
Fun and easy as long as you are properly educated for the job. Very unorganized management and very chaotic at times. Seemed very competitive and they were more worried about rearranging stores than actually bringing in customers.
ProsFun environment
ConsPoor management

Great large company with excellent job duties
A typical day at GNC could consist of multiple things. From going out to a large promotional event at a gym, convention, or sporting event taking place to managing the store and assisting customers.
I learned how to tailor your sales approach to each individual customer or business to best provide a solution that would be suitable to the situation. I also learned how to develop relationships with new businesses, customers, and suppliers.
ProsGreat flexibility, fun job perks
