Veterans’ Nursing Assistant-Certified

Performs nursing assistance and personal care for Chicago Veterans Home residents with physical and/or mental impairments adhering to State and Federal regulatory guidelines; assists residents with restorative care, activities of daily living such as eating, bathing, shaving, dressing, elimination needs and personal hygiene care; instructs residents in the development of self-help skills to the extent they are capable; ambulates, moves and transports residents in beds, wheelchairs, stretchers and lifts using proper lifting techniques; transports residents to and from outside appointments.
Performs the following treatment measures as directed by medical staff: taking and recording weight and vital signs such as blood pressure, temperature, pulse and respiration, body massage, shampooing, heat and cold therapy and application of lotions and creams; performs or assists residents with range of motion exercises.
Lifts, moves and transports residents demonstrating proper body mechanics and application of rules for safe transfer of residents; properly positions and turns residents to prevent skin breakdown; inspects and checks residents in assigned areas to ensure comfort and safety; changes resident’s position as required per policy or ordered by physician.
Observes and reports changes in resident behavior and/or physical appearance to higher medical staff; completes documentation such as I & O, Bowel and Dietary Intake Sheets and prepares and maintains reports.
Utilizes knowledge of effective infection control practices using universal precautions in resident care and adhering to facility policies regarding antisepsis and disinfection procedures.
Performs routine cleaning and organizing of the resident’s units including beds, resident bedside storage areas, patient care equipment and maintains the general order of all nursing areas, inventories resident’s personal clothing and belongings per facility policy and procedure.
Minimum Qualifications
Requires successful completion of an Illinois approved Basic Nursing Assistant Training Program consisting of a minimum of 120 hours of instruction which shall include at least 80 hours of theoretical instruction and 40 hours of clinical practice
Knowledge. Skills, and Abilities
“In compliance with Section 340.1376, of the Illinois Administrative Code, requires inclusion on the Illinois Department of Public Health Nurse Aide Registry. Requires a health inventory and physical examination no more than 30 days prior to and no more than 30 days after the initial employment in the facility. Includes a required tuberculin test. This class is included as an Upward Mobility Program credential title.”
Requires the ability to bend, stoop, twist and stand and walk for prolonged periods of time; requires the use of fine and gross hand manipulation and the ability to push, pull or lift 50 pounds unassisted.
Performance requires visual and auditory ability to work with and comprehend allied medical and/or diagnostic equipment of a technical nature.
Requires a valid Illinois driver’s license.
Honorable discharge from the U.S. Military preferred.
