Personal attacks and some harrassment and specifically targetted
As mentioned, I began to feel targetted in a few days. it seemed like a normal orientation and professional environment the first few days. Trainers were unprofessional, Even orientation coordinator was harrassive and manipulative. I have worked in two Veterans Administration and both contained employees who behaved in disgusting ways which seemed to be brushed off by management. So my impression of their work environment has been traumatizing. In addition, I think they only want people who behave like themselves, and have a problem with honest and vulnerable new hires. Maybe other VA locations are better, and these western locations seemed to have the same vibe which makes me wonder.
ProsWork at home
ConsUnclear directions on work Clear attitudes in inappropriate behaviour.

Excellent and rewarding career
I learned all aspects of Federal Law Enforcement and leadership. I enjoyed my staff and coworkers. The most enjoyable part of the job was the variety of duties. The hardest part of the job, was collaboration with some managers, Chief's and leadership.
ProsGreat benefits and opportunities for advancement
ConsSome training opportunities

The work is rewarding, internal and customers are diverse
I enjoyed working here tremendously. The skills I obtained are invaluable to me. I can take my technical and customer experience into any industry and apply it. The most rewarding was dealing directly with Veterans and their beneficiaries in order to provide criteria information needed to qualify for monthly benefits and helping public in filing of appeals for benefits.
ProsWorking with and on behalf of Veterans is extremely vital and rewarding, the exposure to highly sensitive information builds trust, The role in every job in VA is highly technical, the opportunity to learn about medical terminology, and various technical systems, you will acquire vast knowledge in various areas, including medical terms and bidy systems, prior knowledge of laws will be very useful
Conswork environment is rigid and political, work is highly technical, must be detail oriented, must be fast learner, willing and open to apply yourself

Workplace where everyone is challenged to produce quality work
I really enjoy the work I do, my fellow employees and the management team. They are all supportive of the entire work team and there are always opportunities for growth and development. There are clear paths to management positions and other opportunities for lateral movement. The work is at times challenging, but always rewarding.
ProsPersonal growth potential
ConsNone

Not fun, stressful, unfairly judged position on performance if you really want to help veterans.
This position is not a position if you want to really help veterans. This is a time restricted convoluted section of the va to check the blocks that they are answering the call for veterans.
ProsGovt job
ConsToo many to list!

No opportunities for advancement. Management has/plays favorites (employees), over employee experiences and longitivtiy.
Look someplace else, pay is way below private sector pay. Only benefit is the holidays/holiday pay. Too much interdepartmental toxicity within departments. Leads are power hungry and micromanage employees. No breaks! Be thankful you get a 30 minute lunch because if the cafeteria was busy and you had to wait in line for 10-15 minutes for food, you then will only have the remainder of time to eat, NO EXCEPTIONS! They do not care about their employees. No opportunities for advancement. Management has/plays favoritism amount employees, rather than their dedicated employees with experience and longitivtiy. New hires advance but the long haulers are overlooked when it comes to advancement.
ProsMore Holidays: therefore, more $ for holiday pay.
ConsNo breaks, no pay raises/freezes, no opportunity for advancement

Great Long term employment opportunities
Great Long term employment opportunities, depending on what kind of Department you work in you may not get to take enough time off. The Federal Government has a great benefit package.

Engaging and sense of fulfillment
Working for DVA for 16 years has allowed me to meet an extraordinary client group. Days are challenging as you deal with all sorts of people. The best part of the day would be knowing you were able to assist someone and you have made their life a little better. It was the kind of job where some clients truly touched your soul. These were the people that made you want to go to work.

VA Hospitals
An outstanding place to work and grow in a career in Government service. If you don't like serving those who served (our veterans) then look for work elsewhere.

What is the best way to get an interview?
Asked Mar 3, 2016
By making sure your answers on the application match their requirements. If they require you to have data entry experience, then make sure your resume says you have data entry experience.

Do you have to be a veteran to apply with the Department of Veterans Affairs?
Asked May 20, 2016
No, you do NOT need to be a veteran, nor related to one. Either as a WG or GS. With that being said, you will find a tension within the VAMCs. That what you heard is a normal either misinformation/disinformation communication process going on. Try volunteering while working within your field (civilian) sector, and networking within the field. And apply elsewhere also. Some VAMCs are highly clicking, so think small town, even in a large city. And add as many experiences towards the job to be selected as possible, and practice the interview style used within the VAMC, as a outline on what they are seeking in your field. Look at the other people working there, and see if it is a cultural fit, house and car included.

Why wont the VA hire veterans?
Asked Jul 28, 2016
To the person that said "veterans are hired first ", that is simply untrue and very easily disproved.
Answered Dec 3, 2020
I agree that they are not focused in hiring Veterans. I have been in the IT field for over 22 years, a combat veteran with disabilities, and even in the VR&E program and they didn’t even acknowledge my resume packaged. I’ve gone for over 4 roles with no follow up. The issue is the VA began to pull in outside consulting and non Veterans or non Ex Military, and they are exploiting our opportunities. I may actually do a poll to see how many veterans actually end up in good positions with the VA in the recent past 5 years.

How flexible are your working hours at Department of Veterans Affairs?
Asked Apr 16, 2020
Not flexible at all depending on what department you work in, The office of Community Care are set "tour" hours; i.e. 6am-2:30, 6:30am -3:00pm, 7:00am-3:30pm, and 7:30-4:00pm Monday - Friday. You cannot adjust your hours, if you have an appt, dr. appt etc you have to take leave for those things!
