Overall Reviews at Department of Human Services

This work includes much travel to various locations for trainings while working remotely at other times
A day of training is dynamic and focused on being engaging and value-added far beyond dragging people through a presentation. Coaching sessions over the phone are similarly approached. Codings are completed by listening to sessions of professionals practicing their behavior change approaches with clients, where I create a report and provide feedback, followed by an optional phone coaching session. The positive feedback and energy of interaction with people in groups, especially small groups where the information can be all the more customized in the moment is especially enjoyable and rewarding with all the positive feedback.
The hardest part of the job is so much travel and not enough financial compensation.
I've learned much in regard to facilitation, mediation, and value-added communication with individuals and groups that has transcended professional life to all types of interactions and how to be value-added and/or engaging in various settings with a wide variety of people from all cultures and diverse backgrounds.
ProsAutonomy and Freedom of when to do work, creativity with the content, and remote working possibilities

The worst job experience
Lack of professionalism from upper management to supervisor. Always in a rush to finish work. They don't care about employees. They lie and put you in trouble. This is the worst job that I have ever had.

If you value your mental health...
Working at this place wasn't a good idea. My anxiety levels have increased. I barely have time for my newborn baby. I'm constantly catching up to the unrealistic demanding workload. No caseworker should have over 30 cases. We can't accurately assess for safety and risk and do thorough investigations because we get assigned 6-7 investigations a week. People quit everyday due to the stressful work environment with supervisors and management that aren't supportive.
ProsHealth insurance
ConsEverything else that will drive you to the doctors or therapist

Poor management
Poor management, no opportunity for advancement, poor communication. I would not recommend this organization to anyone who like collaboration and a team environment. Toxic workplace

Nice place to work
Typical office work. Supervisors and Executive staff are personable, professional and respectful. The Division staff are knowledgeable and always willing to help and support.

Busy and decated place to work.
Working with clients can be challenging and rewarding. Everyday is different but still has the same basic routines. All employees are there to help others and that is nice.

It is a great place to work, some people just talk too much (gossip), but the Supervisors are wonderful, they were easy to talk to and very understand
The supervisors were great, the work was great. It is a great place to work, some people just talk too much (gossip), but the Supervisors are wonderful, they were easy to talk to and very understanding and firm when need be.

very slow to finish tasks
Always changing the ground rules of the consumer to fit into some bureaucratic niche. This slows the process to complete to an absolute crawl and no one seems to care. Very wasteful of money and very hard to get a final decision, always pushed further down the line. IF anyone could see the mapping chart of the organization they would laugh. It is the largest gig saw puzzle with lines going from one to all. Cannot be followed.

Time off
I loved working for DHS, lots of training always learning something new. Great work atmosphere. Great management, enjoyed the work family, only left due to the budget cut.

Never boring, fincancial benefits are great.
I learned to interact with both staff & customer's with the emphasis on how to cope in a crisis situation. Management are trained to support staff. Team inclusion in social & wellbeing exercises. The hardest part of my role was dealing with external customers on a day to day basis, can be overwhelming, however assisting other's in need can be very rewarding.
ProsSalary advancement & Superannuation Scheme are excellent
ConsCan be a strain on your Mental Health & Wellbeing, not all Management consider you as a person, the business objectives are paramount at the expense of Human cost, younger staff members have no respect for the older staff members within their team.

Shocking In Every Way!
Newstart, Compliance and NDIS were all shockers! I would never work for DHS again, especially under labour hire - what a joke - 22 year olds running around disrespecting older staff. KPI's were ridiculous and NDIS had bullying issues!
ProsNone
ConsHigh KPI's, bullies, no respect and no career progression!

Rewarding but can be stressful
A lot of negotiation and debt management/collection. You need to be ready for the job emotionally as you are dealing with people's emotions, their money and their children. There is excellent peer support and mentoring.
ProsGood pay and a great camaraderie.
ConsTime pressures and workload

Great atmosphere
Friendly and helpful.
Positive people though we sometimes had difficult conversations with clients due to them owing money to the government. It was not a debt collection as such, rather working out payback strategy
