What are the most important qualities for a successful Delivery Driver?

Delivery drivers are on the road all day. They must be able to go above and beyond and show initiative, flexibility, and the willingness to help by doing more than their job description. In your answer, you should also mention how your past experiences have shaped your outlook on what makes a successful delivery driver.

Example answer: "A successful delivery driver is someone who is always looking for opportunities to help. A great driver will look for ways to increase efficiency by having multiple stops in one day, reducing the amount of time they are on the road. A great driver is also someone who is dependable, responsible and punctual."

How do you stay safe while working as a Delivery Driver?

Delivery drivers do not want to give the employer a reason to worry about their safety while on the job. This is why it's particularly important that you look into the company's safety policies and implement them when performing this job. Your answer should also detail how you stay safe as you do your job.

Example answer: "I always observe the speed limit and try to avoid making abrupt stops. I also wear my seat belt at all times and make sure that my vehicle is in good working condition to reduce the chance of an accident. By following these practices, I have been able to avoid any accidents or traffic citations."

How would you describe a typical day as a Delivery Driver?

As a driver, you must be able to be on time and within a designated area. The candidate is looking for your ability to effectively manage your time. A good answer should be realistic by including the challenges of the job. A candidate who is unable to identify the challenges of the job does not understand it.

Example answer: "I am responsible for driving the truck to a designated delivery area and unloading the product. On some days, I will receive a call from a customer or manager with questions about an order. I also schedule my time to ensure I have enough time to deliver and load all the product in time. It's important to be aware of construction or any other delays that may occur. My boss is very flexible and always willing to work with me when I get caught in traffic or weather issues."

Can you describe how you deliver packages?

As a delivery driver, you will deliver packages to various addresses. This will require parking your vehicle at an assigned spot and delivering the packages within the time frame your employer has outlined for the delivery. Be sure to describe your approach to this task and your knowledge of best practices.

Example answer: "I'm responsible for delivering packages throughout a predefined area. I carry a handheld GPS to locate addresses and plan the best route to ensure I don't miss any deliveries. After the delivery has been completed, I write down when the delivery was made so that my employer can confirm the exact time of arrival. I arrive early because it gives me time to study the route and assess how long I think it will take me to complete my deliveries. I bring water with me in case I get thirsty, and I always carry enough change to make change for customers who do not have exact change."

How many packages do you deliver per day/week/month?

As a delivery driver, this is a great question as it gives you the chance to talk extensively about the job. A lot of candidates give short answers to this question, which is not good. A hiring manager wants to know exactly what your daily duties are, so that they can decide if you are the right person for the job.

Example answer: "I can usually deliver around 6-7 packages per day. That number will increase during peak seasons, like Christmas. It can also be affected by the weather, making deliveries more difficult."
