Duties

The certified occupational therapy assistant is responsible for providing occupational therapy services to patients in the home, school and community. COTAs are trained as an occupational therapy assistant by their state of practice. They provide treatment that meets or exceeds the needs of each patient's individualized goals. This includes: developing therapeutic interventions; managing pain; maintaining physical function; performing functional activities using assistive devices; and administering medications.

Detailed job duties include:

  • Provides occupational therapy services to patients in a home setting.
  • Provides direct patient care and education as needed, including the assessment of functional abilities, evaluation of physical limitations/requirements for treatment, referral of appropriate equipment or materials, and supervision of other professionals who may be assigned to work with the client(s).
  • Reviews all documentation provided by a physician, prioritizing activities that are necessary to provide quality therapy.
  • Analyzes progress toward goals set forth by physicians according to established standards.

Qualification

  • Current state licensure as an occupational therapy assistant
  • Current CPR certification required for the position of certified OT assistant
  • Must be licensed in the state and have current license to practice occupational therapy with no restrictions
  • Able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, using good judgment and discretion when dealing directly with patients and their family members
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding all patient information including medical records, billing statements and more
