Great company to work for!
Big y really cares about their employees, they are a wonderful company to work for I worked there for a little over two years and was able to advance from a cashier to a booth clerk and then to the booth specialist ,which was a made up position by me but that’s the kind of work environment we had we could laugh and joke and felt comfortable with one another! I would highly recommend this company

Main focus is the customer service
Big Y's main focus is customer service and making sure the customer is happy. Management and workplace culture always exceeds expectations. The hardest part and the most enjoyable part about the job is the customers.

Skip this job
no chances of moving up in the company. they pay minimum wage even if you are a supervisor. they don’t care about their employees. management sucks too, they play favorites and only give some people hours

Interactive workplace
Job tasks included picking up and directing calls, solving customer problems, leading the front end, and helping out cashiers when they encountered problems.

The place I learned to take work seriously.
Went to work, would struggle with the lack of hours we could get versus the amount of work that needed to be done. It was a good learning experience, and a good place to know what to expect in the future to come. The people there are great though, as long as you work in the departments. Front end is filled with your run of the mill, 16 year olds. Meanwhile the people mandating the departments: Deli, Seafood, Food service, Floral, etc. Were great people who were there for the same reasons: We all needed money. Management is pretty good for the most part, but they don't count on them to help you out in the long run. All in all, for a food store it is one of the best places to work. Go in there expecting it to be hard, because it will be. Go in there expecting it to be a learning experience, it will be. And if you can bust your butt, and over look how sometimes it can drag you down. It can be rewarding.
ProsThe new employee perks they are doing is great actually.
ConsOverworked, undervalued as an individual, you have to push yourself to get anything done always

bad
the senior management team is a joke at best. they are cruel, and abusive. they also take what ever chance they can to steal hours from employees, and just in general undermine anyone they feel like

Very good employees
Very good store, works well with High School and College students which makes up majority of the store. Very fun and family orientated. Enjoyed working there, they trained me in just about every department which is great because you become more flexible.

Management was never on the same page.
I enjoyed my co workers very much however, ownership fought a lot which made our jobs difficult.

Opportunities for advancement and a great company who is flexible around college schedules
At Big Y, I have many responsibilities and opportunities for advancement, which aids in the enjoyment I have for my job. I have began as a bagger where within three days they had advanced me to a cashier position. Shortly after becoming a cashier, the success I had shown led my supervisors to advance me to a job in the Customer Service desk where I was allowed to have many more responsibilities and I was able to perform complex tasks and handle customer requests. After the Customer Service desk, I then moved onto becoming a Head Cashier only months after advancing to Customer Service. At this point, the advancements decreased allowing me to learn more about the positions I was already holding. Soon enough, I was asked to cross-train into two more positions at the same time: Payroll Coordinator and Pharmacy Tech. I then began my training as a Payroll Coordinator, which requires me to do daily time-punch audits of all of the employees as well as filing payroll every week. According to Big Y policy, the HR and the Payroll Coordinator are only allowed 2 mistakes for the calendar year, therefore the audits need to be watched closely and the paychecks need to reflect the hours that each employee worked in the previous week.
