Lots of Customer Service...
Working there was a new experience for me but it is very customer orientated. EVERYTHING is centered around doing whats best for the customers and increasing sales, sales, sales.

Enjoyed it
Great place to work at - good manager, tasks are taught and feedback often given. Got the chance to work with both books and merchandise. Even worked at basketball games, selling merchandise at the stall.

Good place to start off with
Very resourceful. Very accommodating to your personal schedule. Internal system and trying to get shift switches approved was a bit of a mess. Very diverse staff.

Enjoyable workplace. Typical retail but with an educational twist.
I loved that we sold books. Almost every day I was able to interact with a fellow book nerd. I loved working in the children's department and showing kids the best books and helping them explore reading.
The pay is pretty terrible, especially for the amount of work required of supervisors. There's not a lot of time to complete projects because hours are in limited supply.
Management was flexible and dependable (depends on store manager's personality).
Poor job security.

Fun place to work
I worked at Barnes and Noble at the end of High School and through College and it was such an awesome "first job" that wasn't babysitting! The people I worked with were great and there were always fun events going on in the store. As an avid book lover it was the perfect place to work. I loved working in every section of the store. I would definitely go back to work there.

Fun and dedicated coworkers, but completely disorganized.
Too many sales quotas to hit. Too much turnover. Very disorganized. A good variety of products and a pleasure working with the customers. Coworkers friendly and supportive.

I love this place
The managers are really great people, they like to make sure of how you're doing (both at work and in your personal life) and are always willing to teach you new things if you're interested. I truly enjoyed my time here at B&N. I still go visit them from time to time whenever I'm in the area or when I wanna get out of the house for a bit.

Barnes and Noble bookSELLERS
A typical day at work is clocking in, helping customers, making sure customers buy things, recommending titles to help customers buy more, and then cleaning up the store the best you can and the fastest you can. Despite their flaws, barnes and noble is an excellent company to work for. The culture is palpable. There are plenty of decent managers work with and you have take the good with the bad. The hardest part of the job is being someone who loves to read and who maybe slightly introverted, attempting to sell memberships and titles to people who quite frankly, don't want to be bothered. Overall this is a good place to work.
