This is -my- experience with a specific group and not necessarily a reflection on Avery Dennison software development groups in general.
For my group, there was no source control of any type. Loss of code / work was rampant. A bit after a year into the job, the group started "using" the corporate GIT server. It did not help. Instead of updating, merging and then pushing their code, the normal procedure became to roll back changes in the branch then replace with their local code. Code loss increased as a result. The excuses given were that GIT was "too complicated", "too much work" and that they "never had to do this [before]".
For my group, there were no code reviews of any type. A well know and widely used web based code review system was set up for the group but they refused to use the system or perform any code reviews of any type. Again, I heard the same excuses as given when trying to get the team to use source control.
For my group, seniority and input on projects was almost exclusively based on length of employment with Avery Dennison. Actual technical expertise did not come into play very often. I watched things such as bug fixes get implemented, tested and deployed - only to be repeatedly rolled back by "senior" engineers without informing anyone. Trying to raise a red flag about the damage being done only led to being informed that the individuals in question were "well liked".
During COVID many teams including my own went almost completely remote. Th
On the whole working for Avery was a good experience.
The processing had been automated by the ROBOT software system. So a typical day was to monitor a number of systems, contact support personnel when needed, and report distribution.
The most important thing I learned was to remain involved in a problem until the problem was resolved. This was especially important when dealing with users. An operator must stay involved until he finds out that a user's problem has been resolved. I also learned it was good to get acquainted the programmers, tech support personnel, and even some accountants in or to better understand what the needed from operations. As far as management goes, I think things were the best when Tech Support was in charge of the data center. I learned the most and had the best opportunities when I had a Tech Support manager. The hardest
part of the job was month end processing. Closing would start Sunday morning and could last until first shift operators came in the next morning. The most enjoyable part of the job came towards the end of my tenure at Avery. I was allowed to do some system programming projects for Tech Support. For instance I wrote a program that would use Gumbo software to convert AS/400 generated reports to PDF files. The PDF files would then be automatically emailed to the users by the AS/400.

The enviorment at this plant is very high school esque. Mainly in the higher up departments. They do not encourage you to talk to other people under any circumstance whether it be getting advice about a machine problem, or just having brief small talk amongst co workers to break up the long days. The management will be kind and encourage you to your face then talk trash about you as soon as you walk away to anyone else. There are no sick days here. As soon as you make 5 mistakes you are fired. You do your own quality checks and sample work. They watch your every movement on security cameras 24/7. Management won't take blame for anything. It's always your fault. The pay is surprisingly low to deal with all this. People are leaving in flocks and the management says if the company goes under its our fault. Then we get more mandatory overtime than we usually do when someone leaves instead of them telling a customer we are at max capacity and that their might be a delay. The fellow operators on the floor are mostly good. But that isn't enough to make up for what the rest of this place has to offer. There is no work life balance here. And this plant will more than likely not be here in 5 years maximum
Everyday you come into work, you're assigned to certain machines by your supervisor. And from there on, you rotate. Typical day at work is a very loud machinery, warm, fast pace environment. There's no wasting time because you always got to prep your machines or do a quick follow up with the previous shift's employee before you take over. And as far as grabbing supplies you need base on your machine(gloves, thick cotton gloves, pen, ear plugs) The work place culture is pretty cool. Everybody, when they can or the ones that has the slow machines....they'll help you out. Or definitely buy you a drink on your break. Management is good. There's a meeting per month or when ever safety hazards or concerns that becomes an issue. We always have meetings to tackle those issues off. The most enjoyable part is helping each other out and company celebrations.
ProsTwo 10 min breaks, 30 min lunch, nice lounge, drinks and food vending machine, PPE is provided, Over time, Bonuses
ConsLoud and warm environment, work floor is a bit cramp, third shift's vending machines dont get restock until morning
Productive and fast pace global company with sparkling personalities.
A typical day at work may consist of: learning new things because of the fast pace and always changing nature of work loads that pass threw our department. Management, on a regular basis does a good job of keeping their employees focused on the task at hand and accomplishing customer needs within our means. The interaction with co-workers gives us the opportunity to come together and bounce ideas and knowledge off of one another to come up with the best solutions to the problems that we may face as a department as a whole. The challenge within the work place is communicating effectively with other departments within our local and external branches to get goals accomplished in a timely manner for our customers. It is safe to say that the knowledge of production versus demand isn't as precise as we all would like it to be. The most gratification that I receive from working with this company is the interaction with quality employees and the wisdom and knowledge that they provide on a daily basis.
A solid production platform with a highly stable product that has a significant need for improvement in the workplace culture
Avery can be a great place to work if its leadership team finds itself and gets back on track with the understanding that valuing its people is the first and foremost priority in business. It's the people who build the value into the product and the company and they need to bee understood, treated with respect and developed as the most important business partners. People do make mistakes and these can be the most valuable learning lessons especially when a mentor can turn them into a valuable teaching aspect - the adage goes, "if you can't teach, you can't lead." Avery, Quakertown lacks the ability to teach at the highest levels and sees Operations mostly as a spreadsheet exercise with little to offer in developing its talent. Its all about what you bring to the table versus what can we help you to fill the table with. Too much highly skilled talent has left the organization build a sustainable, healthy, growing environment.
A typical day would start on the factory floor picking up samples for testing. Once that is done it's email time answering sending and acknowledging receipt of emails. next daily meeting and then phone calls or bringing samples to shipping to be sent out to customers or for inter-company shipping. back to the lab for more sampling and test prep, testing and recording all data acquired. Now near the close of day it data entry time more emails and phone calls if needed. This job has brought a new level of accuracy and need for constant quality adherence to my work. The management her is very knowledgeable and efficient in their duties and employee interactions. all of my co workers are very dedicated to their job and to customer satisfaction as well as safety and product quality. The hardest part of the job is not having enough to do during slow months of the year. But that is overcome by the continual gratitude received by managment and fellow employees whay you go above and beyond for the company.
Avery Dennison is known to be one of the better paying companies in the area however it does come at a price. Pour management creats a very stressful and unhappy working environment. When starting your position they offer you NO training and tell you it is on you to do what you need to be able to do your job properly. The managers themselves do not know how to do your job and depend on you soley to make them look good. There are people there who perform pourly but are excused from their bad performances because the manager does not know how to do the job thus needs that person to continue so they do not have to deal with it or learn for themselves. In some departments the workload is heavy and you are expected to put in the many hours, sometime 13 - 14 hour days without any extra compensation. The CEO of Avery announced openly to the company that if anyone was in need of morale then they should get a dog.
Prosgood pay, on site cafeteria
Consterrible management, sad and depressing environment
Great size. Great product line. Wonderful people to work with. Good culture and communications.
I had many wonderful years here being "part of the solution", driving for design innovation and product excellence. I enjoyed the cross functional design & development teams where respect for the various disciplines and communications were most important. The commitment to listening to the customer and then providing solutions that made a real difference was rewarding. This is a company who could be much more valuable because all of the pieces were there working in concert. It is perhaps leadership on high where their are complications. I would HIGHLY recommend this company!
Proshigh quality of workforce, varied product line, company size, benefits, high ethics, excellent communications, fair salary structure, commitment to customers and product excellence.
Constoo tight with the r&d investment dollars, built to deliver and not for innovation, out of touch upper management
I was a trainee in Avery Dennison in the Oostgeest offices (The Netherands). I had an interview that promised way different things than what they delivered. I was getting paid 400 euros (in the Netherlands and in such a big company!!!!!!!) and they promised to pay my transportation costs since i was a student - which they did not do. Well, they paid like 200 euros in total for 5 months when they would need to pay like around a thousand. Whats worse was my 'mentor' and a big manager that i had to face. My mentor was nothing like a mentor, she was always busy enough to even talk to me, we arranged meetings that she never attended and then blamed me for being away from my desk for too long (!!!), she was extremely rude to the customers i worked really hard to bring in contact with the company and she trashed me in a one to one meeting for not seeing a willingness for collaboration on my end. She never gave me any directions and she was expecting for me to deliver huge results - being a trainee with 400 euros a month salary. Mind you that the lowest legal salary in the NL is 1.600 euros/month. The big manager who interviewed me - an american dude- was very sarcastic and told me that my studies and background was 'bullshit' to him and he wont see me succeeding in my life. My 'mentor' in the end said she does not want to proceed with me because im not a team spirit and i dared to speak up for my values in front of the big manager. I seeked for help in HR and somehow, no one could h

Complex matrix organization; high ethical values; global operations;
A typical work day starts with group meeting with all direct repot to align department and/or inter-department daily issues/challenges follow by regional cross functional meeting on new/existing projects implementation progress; a trip to the production floor and tons of emails to respond from global.
Given a role required 50% and more of travelling around the region allowed plenty of learning opportunities on both personal and professional growth from multi cultural to regional work exposure.
Due to frequent acquisition and mergers projects, the organization became a highly matrix complex organization and one has to be cleared on business objectives and game plan in order to obtain fastest approval and support to deliver targets.
The hardest part of my role is to ensure balance for just about every subject that will affect a local/combines P&L performances. One has to stay objective constantly to ensure alignment are achieved among functional and cross functional teams without jeopardizing local/regional performances.
The hardest part was also the most enjoyable part of my role. As one will meet all kinds of personalities during the alignment/negotiation process, the art to communicate, convince or even confront; the act to make a final call and achieve team support; how to construct a win win situation in the best possible approach while targets were delivered.

multi-cultural, very friendly place to work
A typical day for customer service would be starting according to the time zone of the countries you are looking after. Every morning, you would check the current order book status and allocate stock available for despatch. Register new orders and amendment/cancellation request. Attend daily meeting with up-dates on products availability and targets review for the division. Answer customer queries by e-mail or telephone, progress deliveries and fix issues with transport companies, liaise with purchase dept. for stock availability, help colleagues when possible with their workload. I have learnt to be flexible and adaptable to changes as the company evolved, to be a team player and actively communicate with all other departments of the company. Regular meetings are being held with training on a particular subject. On-line training is also continuous with different courses to be completed by a given deadline.
The hardest part of the job is covering for colleagues over holidays/sickness. The most enjoyable part is being in charge of a portfolio of customers and achieving expected targets but also the team spirit which is re-enforced with the daily morning meetings.
Prosfree fruits as part of promoting healthy eating. Private health care. 25 days holiday.
ConsSometimes long hours to get everything done. Pressure.
No repetería.

Leadership team protects people who are not capable to do the work, but have favor. Current LT in 2020 is looking at the bottom line, and there is no longer a culture of servant leadership, just egos and profit margins.

Outsourcing your IT staff to faceless offshore contractors is a bad idea. We need people who care about the business needs just as much as we need the IT system fixed.
