Overall Reviews at Appen

Flexible work schedule
I love Appen but I wish they can improve more of their management as they take weeks before they respond or make actions with our concerns. Also, I wish the could have let their employees stay for as long as the employees are doing their job and not just because an employee reaches its year in a certain project. Also, I wish they could give proper training as we only depends on the manuals that they give us online and when we have questions as I’ve said, they took weeks before they will respond.
ProsFlexible time
ConsLow salary, No growth, Management incompetence

this company is awful
I have been with them for almost 4 years. I have never really had a problem with them. I was suppose to be paid on the 14th, and wasn't, like so many other contractors. Support isn't helpful, they aren't replying back to emails sent to them. They will not tell us when we will get paid, or why the payment is late. This is very unprofessional. The independent contractors are treated like garbage. Please do not do work for this company if you are looking to get paid in a timely manner. They are horrible people. They do not care if your bills or late, or if you have kids or not.

Independent contract work, simple repetitive
Working from home and being able to work when you were available were big advantages of working here. Evaluating social media was quite unique to prior work experience as it was independent job where you did not work with others except for feedback from auditors. The work was simple enough but was very repetitive. The hardest part was staying interested and not getting burnt out after a few months or a couple of years.
ProsWork from home, easy tasks
ConsRepetitive, available work can be scarce at times

Appen Global is a great company to work for. You can set your own hours. You use your own opinions on the platform. They pay on time. I wish there were opportunites for advancement and pay raises.

Convenience to work
Nice place to work as a contractor, some jobs are hard to get into, need to be focused and quick. Didn't get much help on how to do ratings because a lot of the guidelines differentiated from each other so didn't know how to actually write my reviews after a couple of weeks. It is a convenient job to have part time as a college student and hope to continue to work for them.
Proswork any time of day during hours given
Conswaiting two hours after batches to complete final work

Okay pay but not much work
They are great if you don't actually want to support yourself. If its just supplemental, its fine. I was on a project for 3 months then they suddenly stopped it without much notice.

Sporadic work, low pay, extra hours unpaid
Have been working for Appen since December, 2016. The greatest benefit of working for them as an independent consultant is that you set your own hours and can do your job from home at any time during the day or late evening at night. Other than that, projects are sporadic, and can’t count on them (especially after COVID-19), norms are quite absurd to meet, and pay is relatively low and just got lower on most projects. There’re projects where have to put in extra time that’s unpaid, while on others if you can’t meet specific RPH they’ll usually remove you from it. With that being said at $10-11/hour, you’ll end up being paid less than minimum wage, unless can perform as a programmed running robot. However, due to great schedule flexibility I’ve kept it. Wished they could enroll you into another project once one ends as they used to do in the past. There’s no way to call them, but they respond to emails when working on a project. However, if need to join a new project, they will ignore you and reply late saying that the specific project you’ve applied for has been filled and to look for new ones. Currently I’ve applied for 40 projects, and all are pending as ignored by PMs. Basically you have no credibility nor any respect from them as a senior consultant. Other than that is okay!
ProsGreat schedule flexibility
ConsLow pay, sporadic projects

Little support, Little Pay, Stolen Time
Support was lacking. Regularly had half an hour or honest work missing from paycheck because they system gives you a set amount of time to do tasks outside of it. Tasks that have to be done to do the job. That's if you can even get to a project to work in after studying for hours and taking tests for free.

Good entry level remote work. Outdated guidelines.
The job is an excellent starting point for a remote work position to build skills for other jobs. It's also a great side job to make easy $$. The hardest part is trying to pass the qualification quizzes. 98% of the guidelines they give you either don't have all the info you need to pass, or they are EXTREMELY outdated. To be a little more clear, it seems as though the guidelines are missing a few pages from the PDF files. There have even been times where the answers to the quizzes completely contradict the guidelines altogether. It's so bad that I'm really not sure how they even get anyone onboard those projects.
