Great job just wish they gave job placement and job security
I loved working there but afterwards I feel the program forgets about you. I wish they gave job security and job placement after your term is over. Great job

Fulfilling Experience in Serving
Serving as an AmeriCorps VISTA is an incredibly rewarding experience for a number of reasons. You indirectly give back to the community you serve in by improving your host organization to more efficiently operate and better deliver its service to members of the community. The wealth of experience gained from AmeriCorps is invaluable and definitely worth the time and effort. I am proud of my AmeriCorps service, and I am an ardent supporter of the program.

Learned alot
Very valuable skill-building experience. Met a lot of people in the same field. Provided a lot of training opportunities. Had the opportunity to hone and refine my goals as well as attend classes in the evening.

Great opportunity to give back
My personal experience with Americorps was great! There are many opportunities to help out in your community and always valuable educational webinars available, not just on how to help others but also how to better yourself.
ProsGet to help your community, organized, friendly, educational, variety of jobs

Listen well and success is almost guarenteed
I enjoyed the experience, though it was a bit challenging. I enjoyed the challenge though for personal growth. I felt like I contributed something worthwhile from working there.

It was ok
Like any other government funded program it was super systemic. I was a member of the NCCC on the West Coast and they did a poor job at making it a safe inclusive environment for everyone. I was sad to see so many people go due to unfair and racially motivated reasons. A lot of the communities we helped were also not safe and accepting of these "diverse" teams that were being sent out to help. I know there was a few SA complaints regarding managers at the non profit sites, but not much was done. It was a lot of hours and work for very little stipend. I thoroughly enjoyed some of the projects though and did get to travel.
ProsTravel, great on resume, fun projects
ConsA lot of time, poor outdated policies

AmeriCorps program
An AmeriCorps program that allows one to get their feet wet in the realm of social work and crisis advocacy. Job placements vary across crisis centers, legal offices, and government offices across the state. You report back to the AVAP program directly, but are overseen by your host site supervisor. Highly recommend if interested in social work, victims rights and advocacy, or an interest in the law.

Mostly great. It is what you make of it.
One of the most ineresting jobs I ever held. You realize through AmeriCorps there is a lot of need in our own communities wherever you go. Although the execution of ideas can be lacking at times, it is a great way to make a difference in your own country if you're looking for something to do in between jobs.
